Bookmarker's Notes
The prose here is dazzling, and so, so careful. I love this author’s portrayal of Dick and Roy’s love—tender, and messy, and steadfast. (You can tell the author put a lot of thought into all the similes, and it paid off. Such a beautiful reading experience.)

Bookmarker's Notes
This bookmark has been a long time coming, since sometime in the summer of 2019 when I first found these fics. This series is genuinely some of the very best I have ever read in the DC fandom. Characterization and dialogue are so sharp and lively and engaging, and it displays such a mastery of manipulating canon in a way that still feels true to the original characters and stories. This author took these characters and breathed life into them in a way that is astounding to witness, and I am so glad that I get to. If you are just getting started in the DC fandom and are partial to the Batfam or Superfam, this is the best possible place you can start when diving into fan content. (Hell, even if you’re a DC comics veteran, I implore you to read this series—or better yet, to start first by reading Grounded, which is both the predecessor to this series and the fic that I first stumbled across before quickly devouring the rest in chronological order.) I think about this series constantly, and it is the very reason I continue to live and die by stories exploring Dick and Clark’s relationship.

Summary
On Earth 27, Dick Grayson is dead. On Earth 32, Dick Grayson is missing.
Dick knows neither of this. But he knows something is wrong. Ever since he woke up from an injury, his family has been acting strange. Jason won’t stop hugging him, Damian avoids him at all costs, and Tim’s hair is definitely too long.
Or, in a universe where Dick dies, his brothers secretly kidnap another Dick Grayson into their world. But that Dick Grayson has siblings too, and they’re searching for him.

Bookmarker's Notes
The way this author builds tension is immaculate, some of the best I’ve read. Ughhh so good. Dramatic irony, the hints that something’s not quite right (blue orange flavored slushie. Lime in sweet tea. Genius.)
What’s so successful about this story is that it’s so SURPRISING. It twists and turns and jumps out at you when you least expect it! I’ve been told in a creative writing class that in order to keep an audience engaged, your writing needs to be surprising. Not just in your narrative choices, but in sentence structure, word choice, everything.
THIS is how you write an engaging story—it’s all about the tension, the hints, the rising action, putting the pieces together until suddenly the story drops a bomb you didn’t even expect but it still fits perfectly into the finished puzzle. PERFECTION!!!!!
The repetition of lines, phrases, or sentences to build tension is so fucking delicious—this fic is seriously a Masterclass study in how to build tension! Gorgeously crafted.
And I want to take a moment to talk about my favorite line in the entire piece, the one where I had the most visceral reaction as a reader: “It takes three days to fully process the finger prints. When they do, Jason stares at the results in befuddlement. They’re his own.”
THIS FUCKING QUOTE. PHENOMENAL. OH MY FUCKING GOD. So much narrative power is packed into this single phrase that the effect of it is nearly physical. I actually FELT it knock the breath out of me upon impact, and I sat reeling for several moments afterward at this single-sentence epiphany. Moreover, I am absolutely in love with the way Chapter Six begins. THIS is how you write multiverse fiction. The coincidences MATTER. (And I love the idea that other Jasons have done the exact same things—that there may be this whole chain of Jasons spiriting away a Dick Grayson from an alternate earth, leaving that new world bereft of that new Jason’s brother. And the cycle continues. Or, y’know, maybe not. The universe is vast, after all.) This author seems to share the same understanding of multiverse and chance and relationships as the writers of the film Everything Everywhere All At Once, and they prove themself tremendously through their writing, staking their claim on what is and isn’t true of their fiction, and that is so commendable. Because the author trusts the rules and laws of their own fiction, the audience trusts them in turn, and we can’t help but become absorbed right into the story, unable to look away.
Honestly I’m still confused by the ending, but it’s so thought-provoking on its own!! Ahhhhhhh amazing!!!!!!!! I feel just a tad unsatisfied, because maybe I did want it to wrap up nicely with a ribbon and a cherry-on-top, and for Earth 27 Jason to realize his worth and the strength of his family without Earth 27 Dick, so that Earth 32 Jason could bring his Dick Grayson back safe and sound. Maybe I wanted that! But maybe that’s just not what happens. Maybe they fall. The Jasons. Maybe they don’t. Or maybe, they fall, and they survive—or one, or the other, or Dick catches them: his Jason. One or both of them, his. And who knows which Dick Grayson wakes up at the end, or which Jason Todd is sitting vigil by his bedside in the Batcave medbay. It could be anybody. And that’s so damning. Fucking amazing.
And as a small, final aside, I so wish this author had not posted this work under the Anonymous user, but I completely understand doing so. I would love to be able to read their works all together; imagine my surprise upon clicking the link to their other work referenced in the notes of Chapter 4 (What The Living Do, another Dick & Jason centric piece), only to find I’ve already read and bookmarked it at some point in my past. Lovely how it all wraps back around like that. :)

Summary
There’s a whisper of a sigh and a brief icy tap against the skin over his heart.
“You were lonely,” Damian realizes and earns an approving hum. “I see. I… understand that as well. I was lonely here at first.”
He hesitates a moment before holding his hands out, palms facing up. Cold enfolds them in the feeling of large hands. They squeeze gently, so real and so genuine that Damian can practically see them, too.
“But I’m not anymore,” he says and squeezes back. “Not since I met you.”
Damian has never been more lost since coming to Gotham. He finds belonging in the most unexpected of places.

Spoilers ahead!!!
Holy SHIT. The tone-shift was downright jarring—I had pleasantly meandered my way through the first two chapters of what I had expected to be a fluffy hurt/comfort found family piece, and by the third chapter, I’d been lulled into such a nice—but ultimately false—sense of security that I was completely blindsided by the turn to horror. Such a creative take on the premise, and I found myself invested the entire time!! What a great adventure, and by far the only instance of an unhealthy (more accurately, codependent) relationship between Dick & Damian that I could ever actually enjoy, so really amazing work in convincing the audience to root for such a frankly terrible situation. Loved reading this! :)

Summary
For a second, it’s déjà vu. The sight of the small, dark-haired, colorful blur that flips through the air. Then, Wally sees the differences. The murderous glare on the kid's face. The variations in his costume, how his hair sits.
The knee-jerk expectation of Dick Grayson is replaced by Dick Grayson’s brother.
Wally is staring at Damian Wayne.
Who just crawled—dressed as Robin, with his hands bound behind his back, blood streaming from a cut on his forehead—free of a van.

Bookmarker's Notes
Just spent the past three-ish hours reading this instead of doing homework for my online class, but I’m pretty sure Steph would be proud, so I’m calling it a win. <3
(The characterization of everyone here is just so on point. Absolutely flawless. Even the angst ends up feeling soft and fuzzy in the aftermath. This is the type of story that just leaves you with a seed of warmth glowing in your chest. I would read a hundred fics in this universe a thousand times over. The only downside (if you could even call it that) is I know I’m going to be disappointed in any other Steph characterization I read from now on, because it can’t possibly match up to this. Immediate favorite. <3)

He knows giving up Robin and leaving is not the only decision, but it’s the best one. And it’s the one he’s going to make, if only he could get Grayson to stop looking at him like that.
“You’re disappointed in me.” Damian says.
———
Damian has given up trying to be Bruce Wayne’s Robin, and now he just has to leave Gotham, only, stopping to say goodbye to Richard Grayson may mean having to stay, if Damian can’t make himself go when faced with the person who has always meant the most to him.

Bookmarker's Notes
Oh, this hurt. So badly. The heartache is visceral and agonizing, but written so, so beautifully. This story is one of mourning, and grief, and so much love in spite of that pain.
