Fanfiction is by design the perfect medium for a reader to project onto, because the subjects are intrinsically fluid and malleable, and they hinge entirely on each reader’s personal experiences and tastes. That being said, this was one of the closest I’ve related to a character in fanfic, and definitely the most I’ve projected, and I can’t stop thinking about the ending. It feels healing, I guess. Thank you to the author for treating this subject with so much care.

I already bookmarked the aro!Toph-centric fic in this series, but the series itself deserves its own separate bookmark entirely. Characterization is on point, and the author has clearly put a lot of effort, thought, and love into depicting things like disability and abuse and neurodivergency realistically. It all just makes for a set of incredibly enjoyable stories.

What can I even say about this one. I’m not one for love, personally, but this fic aches with it. Such a masterpiece, and some of the finest fiction I’ve ever had the honor of reading. It’s overwhelming and magical and heartbreaking and so distantly fantastical, and yet it’s someone’s story. You can feel the heart pumping in this fic, you can sense the lifeblood there, alive and feeling everything. This is not the first time I’ve read this fic—that was a year ago, maybe more, but it’s still stuck with me. I still remember it frequently. I feel like someday I’ll try to come back to this bookmark note to try and make my words flow nicer or in some way pay deserved homage to the writing in this story, but we’ll see. This fic makes me very tired, like I’ve lived so many lifetimes all at once, but that’s kind of the beauty of stories like this, isn’t it?

Dick jokes, a lot, about being the only reason Bruce still remembers how to talk to people. About breaking him in for everyone else. He was Robin first, and he was Robin longest, and he’s why Bruce took in the others, he’s why Bruce isn’t dead in a ditch somewhere.
And the jokes are funny! He’s never trying to be passive aggressive, or guilt trip, or whatever else. He and Bruce have spent enough time, now, pointedly not actually looking at each other, pulling words out in painful fits and starts. Dick knows where they stand. They’re good.

Nothing else can compare. The tears on my skin are proof of the depth of emotion and character displayed in this writing. I knew from the second sentence alone that I’d end up falling in love with the prose, and I’m now devastated in the most wonderful way.
I’m not sure why my heart chose this fic to connect so thoroughly with, but I still feel all the sorrow and anguish and rage and miraculous joy expressed in Dick and in Damian swirling about inside my chest.
