She starts to speak, her mouth going too wide, and he braces himself before he notices that he’s doing it. Forces his shoulders to move down from their halfway point to his ears. “Damien al Jewel Wayne, right?” She has a smudge of red lipstick on her front tooth, and he is stuck staring at it. She repeats his name, which he doesn’t recognize as his name, then sticks her hand out. The only familiar word was ‘Wayne’.

*This* is how you show the batbros bonding. (I feel like a lot of people want to go ahead and jump from "Jason returns as Red Hood and hates Tim" to "Jason and Tim are best friends forever and love being each other's brother" without much thought of...how that would even logically work—and the same goes for Tim and Damian. It seems as though not many people realize how difficult it would be to come to love someone who's tried to kill you multiple times or whom you've hated so fiercely you yourself tried to murder. But this? Utterly phenomenal. It felt real and organic and it genuinely makes me believe that these three became closer as family. This was just... entirely fantastic from start to finish. Holy shit.)

“Hey dad,” she says, not looking up from her book. It’s a little far away, but he recognizes it’s one of the ones he brought from Earth when they moved here. No Tamaranean books have covers like that. “Bed time already?”
“Yup. Don’t stay up too late reading, alright, starshine?”

There’s so much I could say about this. The voice and POV an narration is absolutely perfect—little Dick’s thoughts and feelings are so clear and vivid, it’s like he’s jumping off the screen with all his little-kid-isms. This fic may be on the shorter side, but even still, I think it’s one of the best feats of characterization I’ve read in fic. This Dick Grayson is real and alive and dynamic, and the prose really brings it all together. I’m not entirely sure why my brain decided to latch so hard onto this one, little of plot and few of words as it is, but I really can’t get enough of this writing!

Alfred frowned and gently pulled Damian back from the door before pulling it open and slipping inside.

Over time since I first read this, this fic has slowly become my go-to fic to read if I’m ever feeling anxious. I could go on about the fantastic dialogue, effortless humor, and endlessly lovable and entertaining characterizations. But I am, at the end of the day, always a sucker for little Robin!Dick Grayson, especially when Bruce’s dad-instincts make a guest appearance, so that’s what always stands out to me. (I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more adorable characterization of little eight-year-old Dickie Grayson than the one in this fic!) The sheer fluffiness of this fic never ceases to ease my mood, and that factor in and of itself makes this one very near and dear to my heart. <3
