And whenever he caught it glimpse of it, it was always right by his sleeping Pa’s hand, like treasure hidden in the lion’s den.
He had asked about it, once.
“Can’t tell you, boy,” His Pa had said dismissively, looking down at him with hollow blue eyes, “Folks… they don’t like people like us.”
Then his Pa had been hung, and the box was the last thing Arthur thought about for a long time. The only time the thought did pop up was to wonder if he had a lot of money, and if so, where he could find it, so he could have more food to at least live til next week.
