Cody was happy once he could get off of Barton IV. He'd been there for two days and two days too long in his opinion. But it was not the clod, or the ice, or the biting wind that made him thank the stars he got off. It was much worse.
Rex looked at Fives, then the Batch, then Echo, then the … the thing and pinched the bridge of his nose. “That’s not what I’m talking about.”
“What then?” Echo asked all innocent, and Cody had to snort.
“Yeah, Rex, what are you talking about?” he asked, and Rex glared at him. It was obvious just what he was talking about. It was standing in-between the Batch, all bundled up in a coat and scarf and a hat - Barton VI was kriffing cold, after all, even inside the base - and beamed at him.

The first birds started trilling their songs when the first sunrays crept over the horizon. A beautiful sound, a perfect way to wake up.
If that kriffing bird would stop singing right in front of their window every morning. With a groan, Phee turned around, not surprised to find the spot beside her empty. Years of military left their marks. Good thing Phee wasn't one for morning cuddles anyway.

Then Hunter cuts the cake in more or less even slices, making Wrecker complain that they shouldn't divide it into equal slices but by equal percentages to their body weight because he deserves the biggest one and Crosshair laughs while smacking him and telling him to stop giving Tech ideas.
When he reaches for his slice of cake, he jostles a candle and hot wax drips on his hand.
