Summary
Shane opens his mouth a few times, like he tries to get words out without succeeding.
“But it hurt you too,” he says finally. “You just wanted to check on me, your fucking boyfriend, after I got hit. And I pushed you away.”
Usually, hearing Shane refer to himself as Ilya's boyfriend sends a warm shiver down his spine. But now, with that almost venomous voice, the shiver is instead cold as ice.
OR, Shane gets injured during a game and Ilya is once again forced to see him unmoving on the ice. Neither of them handles the aftermath well.

Hayden’s eyes flickered to Shane, who sat on the bench, chewing on the edge of his mouth guard.
“Don’t fucking look at him,” Ilya insisted as he bent down for the faceoff.
“Excuse me?” Hayden mumbled, eyes darting back to him.
“You heard me,” he retorted, his tone clipped. “He’s not your teammate anymore; he’s mine. If you think Marlow is a problem to your game, wait until you see what I will do to your team if you hurt anyone on mine again.”
Hayden scoffed, dipping his head as he tried to focus on the game. Something about Ilya’s words still rang through his head though, sounding so definitive that he didn’t want to risk seeing what he was actually referring to when he said that.
The puck dropped again, and Ilya stole it before he could comprehend how quickly it happened.

“No, no,” Ilya said quickly. “We only got serious around All-Stars. But we were… seeing each other since rookie season. Well summer before rookie season actually.”
“And by ‘seeing each other’, you mean….?” Marlow asked
“Fucking, Marly. We were fucking.” Ilya answered with a smirk.
“Jesus Christ, Ilya,” Shane muttered, his cheeks turning red.

“Actually,” Shane went on, “what I really wanted to talk to you about was— When you got that text about Rozanov—”The rookie straightened in his seat immediately.
“Look, we all get caught up in the rivalry sometimes, that’s normal. Me and Rozanov probably do it more than anyone else. But,” Shane chose his next words carefully, “the moment you let that rivalry come before basic human decency… that’s when you start losing sight of what actually matters.”
The rookie’s gaze dropped to his hands. Shane let the words sit for a second.
“We all want to win,” he continued. “That's the job. But we do it by playing better, and stronger, and smarter, and not by celebrating when our rivals get hurt.”

Cliff is very proud to be Ilya Rozanov's best friend (or at least his best male friend). But then Ilya moves to Ottawa, dodges Cliff's attempts to hang out and, oh yeah, suddenly announces a close friendship with a guy he's hated for most of a decade. This would be much simpler to deal with if Cliff had any idea how to talk to Roz about feelings. Or how to talk about feelings at all.

“Yeah, what are the odds,” Scott muttered, a haunted look in his eyes.

They’re alone at the bar now. No one is watching. He could press a finger to Hollander’s lips, wait for Hollander to open for him. He could slide the pad of his thumb across Hollander’s tongue, tip his chin up, and pour the liquid into his mouth. He could watch the bob of Hollander’s throat as he swallows it down.
Ilya takes a drag from his cigarette instead.
“What?” Ilya asks as Hollander stares him down, not unlike an enraged bull. “You are going to tell me not to smoke? Is Vegas, Hollander. No one cares.”
“Neither do I,” Hollander mutters, turning away toward the bar. “Are you going to give my drink back?”
Ilya glances down at the shot glass in his hand and shrugs. “No. Is mine now.” He throws the shot back, suppressing a wince at the taste of subpar hotel bar vodka. When he looks up again, Hollander is already walking away from him into the sea of brightly colored slot machines.

After hooking up at the MLH awards, Shane doesn't go back to his room. He goes to a party. Ilya can't help but follow him to the casino where he realizes something is wrong with Shane.

Objectively, this used to be true. Nowadays Shane has many, many plans, between his nightly plans to look at Ilya’s penis through Skype and his various long-term plans laid out helpfully in his notebook, Canva (For Ilya’s sake. He is a visual learner), and more recently, Excel. Shane loves that excel sheet. He’s colour coded it.
In 2017, Shane Hollander spirals and proposes to his boyfriend of 4 days (or 7 years, or 9 years, or not his boyfriend at all, depending on how you look at it), which leads to a lot of plans, weird theories in the Montreal Voyageur locker room, some Twitter drama, and Ilya Rozanov entering his WAG era.
