Ever since the Avengers formed back in 2012 he hoped he could be more than that. It was a silly notion, he’d long since realised. The Avengers didn’t need *him*. They needed Hulk.

It had been four years. Four years since they’d forgotten him, and four years since Peter had made the decision to leave them in the dark.
But it still hurt. God, it hurt, like someone wrapping their hands around his neck and squeezing until his throat was crushed and the breath had been stolen from his lungs. He frantically pulled off his mask, wheezing. It fell limply from Peter's fingers into the growing puddle he sat in.
Distantly, he realized how hot he suddenly was, despite being drenched in ice-cold rain. His wrists ached and his head pounded, black spots dancing in his vision. Maybe he was finally losing it.
(Peter Parker has nothing and no one anymore, except for Spider-Man. When his arachnid DNA begins overtaking the human, Peter fears he’ll lose control over the one thing he has left. Desperate and afraid, Peter turns to Bruce Banner for a solution — even if the man no longer remembers him)

Tony and Clint decide to show Bruce that the Hulk isn't all bad, but they soon realise that Hulk needs friends of his own.
This story is neither action nor romance; it is built up from moments in the life of the Avengers as they become teammates, friends, and family.
I'm new to writing these characters, so apologies if what I write doesn't match up to how you imagine them. And although I have some idea where I'm going with this, that is subject to change. This story is based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe up to the end of The Avengers, which is the movie I'm most familiar with. I'm probably not going to include anything from Iron Man 3, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, or Agents of Shield, and I'm more or less ignoring the comics.
Please keep in mind that, while I'm not focusing on mental health problems, Avengers Tower is a hot-bed of PTSD, guilt, isolation, and impulsive behaviours which may or may not count as self-destructive, and Bruce in particular has been suicidally depressed in the past. I'll try to include trigger warnings if anything particularly bad comes up, but be careful with yourselves.

Toby’s mind drifted back to the book pages he’d seen. One side with a painting of Bular, not Gunmar, like he initially thought. And the other side with a fierce, and admittedly scary, looking Aaarrrgghh. Holding a human while others ran away.
He tried to imagine that past Aaarrrgghh. Violent and dangerous, with people running away from him in true fear lest they be killed and eaten. Posing enough of a threat to human and troll kind that his place in the book of Gumm-Gumm history was right next to Gunmar’s son.
It was hard to think of his Wingman that way.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the Antramonstrum defeated, an early night of adventure is practically over. Unfortunately, Toby's mind didn't get the memo and is far from ready for sleep. What he learned about his Wingman's past makes his brain work overtime with questions.
Aaarrrgghh isn't faring too well with his own worries either.

Someone (another government agency? rogue section of SHIELD? heretofore unknown random? your choice) feels so strongly that the Hulk is a danger to everyone that they kidnap Bruce and keep him so drugged up that he can't even Hulk out, let alone defend himself. The Avengers do not take kindly to this, and operation EPIC RESCUE takes place.
When the great debate on whether the Hulk is a force for good or evil starts to tip favorably toward the Avengers, someone takes it into their own hands to remove the Hulk from the picture themselves. They never expected the God of Thunder to break into their facility himself, leading his enraged fellow Avengers to rescue Dr. Bruce Banner.
