Excellent, well-plotted, well-paced alternate S12.
"The Road Less Traveled". A very well plotted alternate S12. With Mary resurrected, the British Men of Letters meddling in the United States, Lucifer free and likely plotting something, the return of Gabriel is yet another unexpected twist for the Winchesters. Dean and Mary in particular does not trust or like the archangel, but Sam extends an olive branch to Gabriel, only to discover that Gabriel had hoped to become friends, and that due to a deal with Death that Gabriel made in S5 in return for the keys to the Cage information (in which Gabriel agreed to fake his death and leave Earth for 100 years) and that he later violated (when Dean killed Cain), Death has bound all of Gabriel's archangelic powers. (He retains the powers of Loki, who - in this fic - is Gabriel's vessel.) Gabriel tries to avoid telling Sam that, in actual fact, he has been in love with Sam for nearly as long as Gabriel has known him, and that knowing that Sam will likely never accept him, he'd hoped to develop a relationship similar to the one that Dean shares with Castiel. In the meantime, a tarot deck created by Soul Loom by Michael has been activated and is targeting Sam, and for unknown reasons is trying to force him to fall for Gabriel. And in the background, several important and potentially dangerous entities are jockeying to get their hands on a very dangerous artifact from the Necropolis, a place that no one can go to and return from while remaining sane. EXCELLENT.

Summary
This is my "let's imagine that Gabriel lives" post-season 13 series.
When I look at the earliest works, I squirm. That's because I didn't think this would turn into a series and I didn't put nearly as much effort into the first installments as I should have. Thus, there is pretty shoddy continuity. Forgive me: when I began writing this material, I thought, It's just fanfiction; no one cares about continuity. By this point I have quite changed my mind.

Hands-down the best and most realistic exploration of Gabriel's emotional state after gaining his freedom from Asmodeus, and how he begins the process of healing from all that trauma with the help of Sam and the rest of Team Free Will 2.0.

Summary
Sam secretly writes fanfiction between killing monsters and fending off the apocalypse-of-the-day. In heaven, a newly recovered Gabriel discovers smut and decides to try his hand. Because that's all sabriel will ever be for either of them, obviously- a far-off fantasy.
There's no way what they're writing about could ever find its way into their real lives. No way whatsoever.

Post S13. With Gabriel now in charge of Heaven and Sam leading the AU!Hunters, Sam and Gabriel both take enjoyment in writing Supernatural fanfiction. Both of them have begun shipping Sabriel, believing it to be impossible in the real world. Inevitably their online personas encounter one another and they begin to collaborate, even as their real-life interactions deteriorate into miscommunications. Eventually, they meet at a convention and realize one another's real identities.

S5 divergent fic. Sam turns around and goes back for Gabriel before Lucifer can kill him at Elysium Fields and gives Gabriel permission to possess him in order to save Gabriel. As time goes on, Sam wins Gabriel over to the Winchester's side, and Gabriel develops a fondness for his impromptu vessel. They also begin to realize that Heaven's problems may have been orchestrated by other forces than God, and that the archangel's brothers may have been manipulated into this fight.
A wonderful exploration of a very interesting "what if?"

It's Christmas time at the Bunker, but Sam is still having a rough time with nightmares of the Cage and general feelings of inadequacy. Good thing our favorite archangel is there to make it all better.

Gabriel keeps showing up in the Bunker, and Sam finds comfort in his presence, realizing to his heartbreak that he's in love with the archangel. An archangel that such a broken man could never deserve. Meanwhile, Gabriel worries that Sam hates him, or only wants a casual relationship with him, and he cannot bring himself to be anything less than all in.
A beautiful work filled with lots of mutual pining.
