In order for that to change he must take on a Common Consort for three years, a spouse that will help him keep the interest of his poorest subjects in mind. Unfortunately, he winds up with Merlin.

“What did you do now Merlin?”
“Got cursed.”
Merlin slumped into the room and fell onto the bench of the table across from Gaius, laying his head dramatically on a book of something or other Arthur didn’t bother to look too closely at.
“Cursed.” Gaius echoed, unimpressed.
“Cursed.” Merlin sighed back, like some kind of weepy maiden.
“He can’t lie,” Arthur supplied, walking further into the room and standing behind Merlin, pushing his head off the book roughly. Merlin squawked and glared at him before shaking his head and turning back to Gaius.

Summary
Merlin is so gone for Arthur. For years now, in fact. It would be embarrassing, if he wasn’t almost completely sure Arthur felt something for him too.
Until the day Arthur Finds Out.
It’s not that he hadn’t imagined a bad scenario of Arthur finding out. He had. Of course, he had. But more so that Arthur would send him away, or sack him, or…well. He supposed he didn’t have any scope of imagining that Arthur could look so horrified, and be looking at Merlin, at the same time.

Arthur finds out Merlin's secret - and he does not react well.
Arthur snatched his sword up from the ground, rolled back onto his feet and lunged forward quickly to bring the point to Merlin's chest and keep him away. "Stay where you are," he said and Merlin stopped, his eyes going wide in panic.
