To a human who had not spent their childhood in warfare, they were borderline incomprehensible.
To Gordon Freeman, their college professor, they were a headache.
In which Gordon Freeman teaches community college, Alyx Vance has her great coming of age story, and Barney Calhoun pines like extinct vegetation. And in which everybody grows older, but nobody grows up.

It is one of my favorites series I've done. “Well yeah,” Red huffs, crossing his arms. Freeman swears he hears a “duh” thrown in for extra effect, but that might just be in his head. “You’re both either clones sent to kill me or alternate versions of myself, also sent to kill me.”
He punctuates it with a shrug, accompanied by a challenging look. Yellow in fact challenges it, with an impressively disappointed facepalm that sounds like it hurt as much to do as it was to witness. He can feel his parents guilting him for going across the country for college all over again. “Okay! Okay. Why are— Why do all the options include your murder, exactly?”
Freeman nods along with that completely valid question, pretending that the thought of his own murder had not been the first thing to cross his mind when meeting the duplicates. Red sends him a dirty glare, like he knows the truth. Whether or not it’s just some sort of inherent instinct that comes with being the same person, or if he’s randomly got the ability to read minds is anyone’s guess.
Imagine that, versions of him with superpowers.
OR
Gordon Freeman meets himself. Ten times, in fact. Now he's not sure what's more likely to kill him; the end of the world or these maniacs.

But when said ex shows up demanding Gordon lets her see their son, and that he returns home with her, a group of wacky scientists and an oddball guard make it their mission to insure Gordon never has to deal with that bitch again!

This story starts in many places, which is to say, it never began so much as it picked up.
It picked up in 1969 with the first run of Half-Life Comics’ ADVENTURES OF SUPER PUNCH-OUT! In 1980 with a grittier reboot where Punchout discovered he was a faulty clone from a long-defunct research facility, and that the same facility had been creating test-tube supersoldiers. In 1985, with a misprint introducing Dr. Professor as a deuteragonist, and the GMan as their shadowy past personified. In 1998, with a limited run about the GMan’s family: an adopted alien and her “dog.” In 1999, when the run was expanded and the teenaged Rush-Hour met the Mix Marksman. In 2007, with the introduction of HEV to the now-grown lineup. In 2011, with HEV retconned into a person wearing a power suit.
We’re picking up in 2020, with the latest Rush-Hour series: Altenaria. Named after a genus of mold sometimes called “black heart” when contaminating pomegranate fruits, it’s an opportunistic little pathogen that will damage any host plant it lands on.
(As far as titles go, it’s a little on the nose.)
