Summary
Nicholas D. Wolfwood is hardly what one would call a connoisseur of literature. As far as he’s concerned, it sorts itself nicely into three buckets: smart books, scripture, and drivel. He avoids the first on principle, finds himself unwillingly dragged through the second more often than not, and dabbles in the third if the fancy strikes.
The book that’s caught his eye presents a conundrum he wasn’t prepared to confront at 10 AM on a bright, already-roasting Tuesday morning. He’s been left unsupervised in a general store while Vash takes care of some do-gooder something or other, and his boredom had him gravitating to the rack of double-dime novels tucked in the back corner. The drivel selection is top-tier. Most of the books he can open at random and land on something both intriguingly salacious and horrendously written, and Wolfwood has spent a solid fifteen minutes gleefully paging through paperbacks with covers featuring washboard abs and heaving bosoms before he spots the book that’s going to ruin his life.

With Kni now present and helping, Vash sneaks away to look at the album himself. It’s still open to the page Kni was peeping at, featuring grainy photographs of Rem and Alex (who Vash has only seen in pictures) making what Rem had called a “snow man”. Three balls of snow with button eyes, a scarf, and a hat. The snow itself is white, and washed out in the faded photograph. It was miraculous that Rem even managed to take this photo album with her, when she left.
“We don’t need to have snow to celebrate Christmas, anyway,” Rem is explaining, resting her hand on top of Kni’s head and ruffling his hair. She offers him a warm smile, and Kni shoots back a pout, grabbing at her wrist to cease the motion. “It’s about spending time with your family, with the people you love most in the world. Eating together and exchanging presents. You don’t really need anything more than that… Though it’s nice to have a tree. Thanks for helping me decorate this, boys.”
Kni is easily appeased; Vash remains sceptical, setting the photo album down so he can fold his arms. “You say that about every holiday, though, Rem.”

Summary
The paper within started off as a typed form letter, addressed simply, “Dear Citizen,” which thanked him for being willing to take on the burden of such intense personal upheaval and such thorough secrecy. Wolfwood skimmed the puffed up nonsense once he clocked that the mysterious, important work they’d be doing would stay both frustratingly mysterious and vaguely important. Further down, he found neat handwriting, the only part of the page that had been personalized.

It’s been about twenty or thirty odd years, he thinks— he has so much to tell him about, things about technology and new feats, about the small ways humans are finding ways to be impossibly kind as much as they are cruel. Thirty years is enough for rises and falls of events; humans are busy.
(When you last saw it, December was half as large. Did you know? There are ferns now, they’ve started planting things in the earth. I grew a carrot as large as my head last week.)

When he doesn’t, Vash’s palm moulds itself against Wolfwood’s cheek, warm through the leather of his glove. His fingers are long enough to brush Wolfwood’s pulse point, where he can feel his own heart continuing to race. That same prey instinct. And when Vash tips Wolfwood’s head back, face upright, he can just barely make out the sharpness of Vash’s features through the fuzziness of his vision.
Wolfwood is only human.
“The way you look at me sometimes,” Wolfwood gasps. “I want—”
“Hey,” Vash responds at once. His hand slides back to Wolfwood’s nape, fingers threading through his hair.

Summary
Nick Wolfwood is the new director of Conrad-Chapel Funeral Home in May City, located across the street from Saverem Greenhouse & Landscaping. Over time, the owner, Vash, gets to know Nick and introduces him to the rest of the neighborhood, including local busybodies and married feminist bookshop owners Meryl and Milly. Vash and Nick are inexorably drawn to each other until they have to start admitting their feelings.
But Vash's brother, co-owner of the garden center, hasn't left his past as far behind as the twins had hoped when they started their lives over in May.
