But he can’t seem to let go of Eddie’s death. To Steve, it’s unfair that he gets to survive demobats attack, while Eddie dies due to it. It’s unfair that Steve and all of his mindless bravery of charging ahead in every situation are still standing today, while Eddie…Eddie who hid behind his fearless bravado but twitched at a slight sound and shivered with his whole body, who promised Steve to not be a hero but made a bait out of himself to distract enemies away for their plan to work is gone. It’s unfair how unfortunate Eddie was, to die on his first encounter against the upside down, while Steve manages to escape it time and time again.
OR: Steve time travels to save Eddie. He falls in love.

Summary
Eddie sees Steve’s eyes widen as he softly breathes, “Oh sh… shit.”
Within a moment, Eddie is at Steve’s side as he stumbles, nearly collapsing to the ground until he crashes into Eddie’s chest. Eddie grabs him quickly to both steady and hold him up.
“Oh Jesus,” Eddie says for what feels like the millionth time that day, “You-!”
“I’m fine,” Steve cuts him off, but with the way his voice is strained and he’s slumped against Eddie, unable to support most of his own weight, Eddie would have to be both blind and deaf to believe him. "Wow, take me to dinner first, won't ya, Eddie?"
Eddie realizes that Steve’s actually a really good person, but man, he really needs to stop throwing himself headfirst into danger.

Steve hears them before he feels them; a warm, wet pain burning in his torso, intolerably excruciating.
There’s a bundle of squawks and screams, outbursts of panic and anger, and it’s only when Hopper falls forwards to take Steve up into a slightly rough, protective hold, does he realize that two of those shots have lodged themselves in his own flesh and bone. (Realizes that he’d moved, instinctively, to shield El, despite never having spoken to her, who’d the gun had been so precisely pointed at, aimed for.)
Steve Harrington watches his own blood pool and trickle over a series of hands pressed against him, small and large, soft and rugged, and for a moment, wants to stay like this. He can’t.
