"Peter Parker," Strange says, taking Peter's hand to shake. His grip isn't as firm as Peter expects, but the sensation of scars against his palms is oddly grounding.
"Hi, Doctor," Peter says softly, smiling politely.
Strange watches him for a moment too long before withdrawing his hand. Peter's heart beats erratically as he hopes that his grief isn't written all over his face; Aunt May always told him that he's an open book, particularly with his eyes.
"Have we met before?"
Peter swallows anxiously.
"Nope."
Peter meets Dr. Strange as Peter Parker, and keeping his greatest kept secret suddenly becomes infinitely more difficult. Especially when it becomes apparent that the universe seems determined to slowly unravel the spell that Strange himself casted four years ago.

Peter forces a smile, but he can still hear it:

He looks at Bucky and is instantly hit with the old Bucky face. Full block, expressionless wilderness, a six-lane blacktop of good luck guessing what’s going on back here. Miles of unreadable. The expression Bucky rocked for at least a year, when Peter was shiny and new to this, before all the smirks and smiles crept in, and before he was allowed to guess out loud what was behind them.
“You got to me fast,” Peter says, echoing Tony’s words, tone a touch flat. Trying to make it fact, not feeling, seems to be working. If Peter was to make this feeling, he doesn’t think he could deal. At all. Fact is safe. Fact is extremely not a feeling.
Bucky gives him a clipped nod.
“You got to me very fast.” Peter’s own addition this time. He’d seen the video. It was very. Very.
Retrospect: noun, the act of looking back and going 'oh fuck, that's what that was'.

Bucky doesn’t think about it at all just after coming off the ice and in the wind.
First few weeks after the riverbank, it’s all fight-or-flight, anyway. He’s paranoid as hell, putting too much effort into not snapping necks in panic. Don’t kill, it would draw attention, move, vanish. He still waits for orders that no one’s giving, so get the fuck outta here with that, he’s got bigger problems.
When Steve shows up, as if Bucky can be fixed with some elbow grease, all Bucky feels is a threat, the past coming to collect. He runs, and wants to erase himself the same way Hydra did, doesn’t want to be found, fixed, saved, and the last thing on his mind is someone he’s never actually met.
He doesn’t notice it in Schkeuditz.
Tether is most common when folk talk about it, soulmates when they preach abstinence in church. But it’s a distance thing. Eight feet, three inches. Doesn’t sound like fate to Bucky. Sounds like math.

They reek of sweat, filth, and something vaguely burnt—the fuck? Must’ve been his self-respect torching itself and going up in flames.
His head is pounding, his heart is pounding, his den’s a war zone, the bed broken. His goddamn mattress looks molested. Jesus. What the fuck was that?
In Bucky’s defense, the compound’s a revolving door, and he barely recognizes half the faces most of the time, let alone pays attention to memos that pop up on his phone.

New York might be a sprawling concrete jungle, but the term "six degrees of separation" is less a theory and more a fucking day-to-day reality, especially if you wear spandex for a living. To be fair, in a city of eight million stories, Peter should hardly be surprised that he eventually collides with a one-armed super-soldier and whatever-the-hell-category Deadpool falls into. Should be hardly surprised, but almost is, even though it was a long time coming. Village. Peter's suddenly hit with the urge to purr. Fucking purr. Like he's some kind of oversized tabby cat presented with a warm sunny spot. This whole situation — from the weird-ass scent explosion to the sudden urge to rub his face against the metallic chassis of the Iron Man suit — is ten kinds of ridiculous.
Another growl cuts through the air, and instead of inciting more confusion, it makes Peter almost... giddy? He's oddly tickled by the whole thing. Mr. Stark and Sergeant Barnes, growling like they're alphas or something. It's hilarious.

The clasp might as well be a mini solar flare in the dim of the spaceship's cockpit, and Tony tries and fails to recall the last time he bought something that wasn’t a self-indulgent binge that tends to accompany a close call and normally ends up with Peter muttering, “You shouldn't have.”
Tony didn’t buy him this. He could have; it’s tasteful, not blinding like some gaudy, gem-encrusted monstrosity. It doesn't scream look at me, I'm worth more than your car. Instead, it whispers, look closer.
Really, Tony lecturing about the dangers of accepting gifts from power players is a joke so rich it should be taxed.
