I don’t wanna be your friend, I wanna kiss your lips'?”Mike took in what Max said. 'I don’t wanna be your friend, I wanna kiss your lips'. It was true. He’d loved Will since he was ten years old. Probably before that, too. Mike sometimes thought it was a miracle and a curse. Will didn’t notice how often the ravenette’s eyes flickered to his lips. His soft, pink lips, which Mike loved to see stretched in a smile or laugh when Mike said something stupid but funny.
Still, his cheeks turned pink in all honesty.
“Isn’t that a little…” he struggled for an accurate word.
Max laughed at his reddening face. “Honest?” Mike nodded, for lack of a better term.
“The whole song's a love confession, Wheeler. Or did you forget that?” Mike frowned, but nudged her shoulder in protest. “I didn’t forget, I just — well, you know. It’s a bit…straightforward.”
OR
Will got his acceptance letter to NYU, so Joyce is hosting a surprise (not really) party. Mike's gifting him a new easel and canvas, but something more. A song to confess his feelings for Will.

Summary
When he’d arrived, letting himself in using the spare key he knew was always tucked under the carpet, he was met with the sight of Will in the kitchen, leaning against the counter for support with tiny cuts all over his leg that were bleeding, glass shattered over the floor.
Mike felt his heart break just like the glass on the floor when he saw the look in Will’s eyes.
He swore he was going to kill Carlton.
OR
Carlton and Will fight, and Will gets hurt. Mike comes over to help bandage him up and they can't stop denying the tension between them.

Summary
Will burst into one of the most blinding, dazzling smiles Mike had ever seen. It wouldn't matter if they were on the darkest, cloudiest night in the middle of the ocean; Will was a beacon of light. Mike couldn't tell if there were actual stars in his eyes or if it was just a reflection, but it didn't matter. Will was too stunningly beautiful, and that look was too intense, and he had to look away as his stomach turned and his brain tried to come up with a generic response to whatever Dustin was saying on the radio. The past few weeks he had been desperately trying to convince himself that it was just his old crush rearing it's head. He had moved on from Will, really. They could be friends again without all the relationship drama that came between them in highschool. But sitting on the top of a hill on a cold November night he realized nothing had changed at all.
Fuck, he was still madly in love with Will Byers.

After graduating, both Mike and Will struggled to adjust to life after the Upside Down. It didn't help they had already drifted apart. But now, 8 years later, Mike finally reached out again, and the 2 struggle to rebuild their friendship while also hiding their romantic feelings for each other.Series

Summary
Mike's life is split in three categories; the life he should have, the life he wants to have, and the life he has to have. Currently, he's living in limbo between all three; he'll never have that white-picket fence and suburban wife, not when the only girl he could try to love has left him, and while he's finding it harder to live the life he has to have— the life where he hides himself so deep, not even the people he loves know who he is— he'll never get the life he wants, either.
Limbo sucks, to put it simply. He's so close to what he wants (which is Will, no matter how hard he tries to shove it down) but he just can't push past that barrier and talk to Will, not when everything he does always feels wrong.
But, maybe, Mike might come to learn that what he wants isn’t so bad, after all.
(Or; Mike's struggle with his internalized homophobia— among other things, including the concept of free will, Robin Buckley's mildly terrifying presence, and wanting things Mike's sure he doesn't deserve— structured around the five stages of grief. You can mourn a life you'll never live, and you can mourn someone you haven't actually lost.)
