Welcome to Kieferberg! Please make yourself at home in our village. Today is the long-awaited day of our festival in celebration of St. Walpurga. By the full moon of this night, witches will be warded off for another year.
Enjoy the hospitality, as our second and final guest. No route for merrymakers to attend from Primeldorf exists.
The celebrations are not for you. Nor is the challenge, which is negligible to begin with. One cannot expect too much from an amateur.
(Or, on the morning of April 30th, Elise Liedl descends from her home in the hills to attend St. Walpurga’s festival in Kieferberg below. But as a great and stubborn storm topples trees and looses land, sealing off the village and the woodland from the outside world, the maid-of-all-work with a ravenous ambition grapples with an ominous feeling she’s forgetting something… And the lingering shadow of the witch looms in whispered words, passed down every seat at her table, awaiting her feast...)

Summary
Someone else has walked the forgotten trail. She has stooped to lift the prettiest pebbles, which had once only served to buffer the blisters on Elise’s feet, and she has shown them to Elise with fascination.
Someone else has taken in the sight of the old house, and bore a fresh smile each and every time as she did, finding something so special in a place Elise has found dull for so many bygone years.
Someone has been here, to smile as her weary bones lug themselves across the threshold in the evenings, and lift her spirits with need for naught else.=====
The night after Elise and Rozenmarine turn away from their looming fate, Elise struggles with letting go of that lofty dream - and, caught between paths at a crossroads, comes to reflect on how very much her feelings are worth.

Their eyes meet across the skipping stones - Elise having been planning on simply trudging through the shallow waters, the terrible price of this gorgeous dress be-damned, the terrible price of this flagrant fantasy frock the reason - and against the whispering moonlight, Lebkuchen is the first and final angel that this sinner could ever hope to witness.
(The gold and silver weights concealed behind her back only make her shine brighter to Elise.)

In the fate where the cost of Elise’s greatest sin is Freya, Lebkuchen still remains when she returns to Kieferberg, to the viewpoint one last time. Yet that fate does not grant Elise the pocket mirror. This lost tale, devoured by later truth, tells why.
