A few months after Vox's failed attempt to conquer Heaven and Hell, Angel is granted enough freedom to visit the thriving Hotel every few weeks and whenever Valentino is in a passable mood. It wasn't as often as his friends would have wished for, but it had been enough for him and Husk to start a sort of relationship without the expectation of redemption breathing down their necks. Angel wants to keep his friends safe, Husk wants him to be safe, it all comes crashing down when a mysterious illness that started spreading through the Cannibals turns their afterlives upside down.

Hell is nothing but a game to Vox. A game he’s played for years, a game he can safely say that he’s mastered. Or at least, pretends to have mastered. He’s not as perfect as he pretends to be, sure, but he has to try. Because one little slip-up could destroy everything he’s worked for.
It’s happened before. He won’t let it happen a second time.
But a mindless threat spirals into something bigger when Alastor reveals one of Vox’s biggest secrets in retaliation—a secret that Vox told him many years ago in strict confidentiality. And suddenly, Vox is going to have to try much harder to keep everything in line so he doesn’t lose it all…again.
It seems to be fate, the way nothing ever lasts. Determination, control, and that ever-present mask of flawless power can only do so much before everything burns to the ground.

Before today, Vox would’ve never said that he felt intimidated by the moth.
But now? He was fucking terrified. The principle on which their relationship was built got destroyed together with his image. Before this moment, both Valentino and Vox knew if one of them pulled the trigger, the other would follow, and all that would be left would be death and destruction. Mutual annihilation in its perfect sense.
Except now, Vox no longer held any power, and Valentino was painfully aware of it. Nothing good could come from the look Vox saw in the other’s eyes.

Summary
After the events of season two, Vox is ready to move on and forget all of that ever happened, content to lick his wounds and hide away. He's done with Alastor. This was the last straw, and he's tired of losing.
Of course, this doesn't sit well with Alastor. The sudden withdrawal of his closest enemy has made him realise just how much he actually cares for said enemy after all and now he must, in a strange role reversal, chase after him and try to get Vox to look his way. Easier said than done, and he might be too late.
He's still going to try.
