He almost turns and stretches to bask in the glow of the midday sun when he hears a scratching against wood behind him. Not wild and imprecise like an animal, a calculated movement. Not the horns of a beast or talons of a bird, but a knife.
Hunched over on a rock nearby at the base of the stream is the largest man Jude has ever seen. His clean grey-blue tunic is strained across his broad shoulders. Blonde hair falls over his back, two braids pulled back by a leather tie. He’s nothing like anyone Jude has ever seen before.
