Summary
Glinda remembers the train in all its opulence. The cutest little mustache man and the smoke billowing in plumes around the machine’s emerald bodice.
She remembers the platform. It was packed with their classmates, handpicked by herself to celebrate her Elphie’s departure. They whistled, they cajoled, with signs and well wishes.
Fiyero gave Elphaba a poppy, and Glinda remembers the discomfort that flipped in her stomach. She remembers she ignored it.
But, most of all, Glinda remembers the invitation.
“Come with me.”
And the awkward race along the side of the train.
She remembers Elphaba’s hand in hers, and the warm, tingling feeling that swept through her from head to toe.
She remembers nothing else.
Nothing at all.
But somehow Glinda finds herself pulled from a river in the Southern Quadrant of Oz, an odd, untitled tome in her possession, no Elphaba to be found, and an Oz repeatedly telling her it's been five years since the day she joined Elphaba on that train.
Or Glinda has no memory of the past five years and tries to find her way back to Elphaba, but very little in Oz is how she remembers it.

After a moment of silence that feels like an eternity, Galinda moves closer “What’s your room number?” she says, leaving no room for hesitation.

Galinga hums in satisfaction, her smile sickly sweet “Well then, if you get a knock on the door tonight around, say nine o’clock…?”
“I might open.” Elphaba’s expression is unreadable, her tone flatter than ever.
“Then I might knock.”

Madame Morrible’s lips curved, not quite a smile. “Do you. How admirable. You have always had such… appetite. I did not know it spanned learning, too. Hungry for knowledge, are we?” The word struck with a strange force. Galinda felt it land somewhere beneath her ribs; a small, cold weight.
The old witch continued, tone conversational. “Yes… Appetites for admiration. Appetites for attention. Appetites for… indulgence, after all. It is a pity, really. Such a pretty girl. One would hope you might learn restraint, Miss Upland. Maybe it’d help your studies. A little less appetite and a little more restraint.
A hush fell, subtle but immediate. Galinda heard it the way one hears a glass set down too hard in a quiet room. Somewhere behind her, a student shifted in their seat. Elphaba’s head snapped around, eyes flashing.

With a flick of her wrist, everything returned to its rightful place. Her cloak and hat hung themselves neatly on a row of tree roots she had coaxed to grow like hooks. Her boots slipped off, sitting by the long stretch of trunk that served as her launch point when she flew. The broom, still buzzing under her hands, settled easily next to her boots, its bristles straightening themselves out after a long fly. Elphaba watched, one eyebrow cocked. The thing wasn’t alive, exactly, but it certainly had opinions about how well she maintained its aging wood.
Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she pinned the new poster up to the wall, stepping back with a sigh.
“You’d think that after this long, they would give up on the story that you kidnapped me.”
