“What about you, Bob?” Phoenix asked when she noticed her WSO wasn’t joining in. She knew Bob was a little shyer than the rest of the group, so she’d started being more intentional about bringing him into conversations. “When was the last time someone picked you up?”
“I’m not sure,” Bob said. “I can’t remember, but I would have been five I guess.”
“Why five specifically?” Fritz asked.
“That’s when my parents died,” Bob said. “My grandparents raised me after that, and they were too old to do stuff like that.”
Five times the Daggers picked Bob up, plus the one time he carried them.

Bradley was familiar with Penny. After all, he’d been there for at least three bouts of the ‘on’ part of ‘on and off’. He’d been jealous of her before. But there was something about knowing Mav was off fucking her while he was at home, thinking about it, that sank in differently. As a child, his jealousy had been to scale. As a teenager, it had been petty. But as an adult? Jealousy was a bone-deep source of rage. It was deep, dark, and angry.
Leave it to Mav to stir that back up inside him.
So he started plotting. And Mav fell right into his hands.
And the thing is that it never would’ve worked if Mav hadn’t wanted him from the get-go. So take that, Penny he thinks, smugly. "

" Some might call it suicidal, but Mav saw it as destiny aligning just right so that he could save his death for just the right moment. Die with a purpose, save somebody else, and find himself in his husband’s arms again.
Then again, Mav hadn’t accounted for Bradley taking after him quite so much, either. Somehow, he survived a mission that felt like a death sentence, one he’d been glad to fulfill, and when he came home, he didn’t know what to do with himself. What was left? He’d taken every step necessary, had made peace with a death that wasn’t fulfilled, and he didn’t know what to do with that. Not now that he had to actually reckon with Ice’s absence.
The distraction of the mission had kept his mind off of the grief, far more focused on getting the Daggers back alive and successfully bombing out the uranium plant, but with no goal to orient his focus around any longer, it hit him. Full force.
He stepped through the front door of their house and he just…crumbled. "

“Hey,” the sniffling stopped abruptly. “Hey, kid.” Silence descended. “You okay?”
“. . . whatta you care?” Was the petulant answer. About as fierce as a kitten, really. A memory rising to the surface of Goose’s mind. A memory of the first time he’d met Maverick and helped him fend off several guys who were trying to beat on him simply for existing.
“Just call me a concerned citizen,” Goose shrugged though he knew the kid couldn’t see it.
“Doesn’t matter,” the kid muttered, sounding lost and resigned, plucking at Goose’s heartstrings.
“Can I come in there, kiddo?” Goose asked softly, no about to go where he wasn’t wanted.
“. . . I ain’t stopping you.”
