Martin opens his mouth to speak. To his absolute horror, what actually comes out is: "I used to pretend to cry because I liked how nice you were to me when you thought I was upset!"

Tommy hesitates.
Tubbo, still laying on Ranboo's shoulder, pauses. Ranboo watches Tommy, again with that same look that Tubbo had before, with the cat at the sliding door. A test.
Tommy's insides curl unpleasantly.
"Ah," Tommy goes, careful to sound politely interested, not prying, not surprised, not overly curious. Just as if Ranboo had told him a fact about dinosaurs or the mechanics of a car- like magic is some distant thing that Tommy will only ever know the surface of. "That's cool."

So it’s up to us to put things right.” “Tommy” buried himself in the embrace to hide his scarlet eyes and growing horns. But he was only pretending to be human. He wasn’t- wasn’t weak. He was more powerful than this wretched human. And yet how often had he been scared and hurting? He’d replaced Philza’s real son in a bid for power, but it was never going to protect him, was it? There would always be someone stronger.
“How?” the demon begged.
“By being clever, and patient, and most importantly kind.”Or; one by one Philza’s sons were replaced by monsters. It’s the first taste any of them have of love, but their masks are far more than skin deep.

A character study for each of the major Magnus Archives characters, starting with Jon and Martin. Exactly 1,500 words each, it's a look at their perception of self and what's driving them. Written in prep for a larger project, it felt worth it to post them as stand alone pieces.
"Jonathan Sims carries such a strong aura of being overworked that when you spend more than a few minutes in his presence you start thinking about a third cup of coffee to get through the rest of your day. Jon would be handsome if he wasn’t so tired, or if he devoted any effort to his presentation. The dark circles under his eyes had been a common sight as long as he could remember looking in the mirror, but became permanent fixtures when he started working in the Archives."
