Summary

We've visited my mythical Plain County, Alabama, and its county seat, Sally, once in 1960, once in 1983, and four times in the present. Please accept my invitation to 1874. Let's visit the Civil War-widowed Carol Aird and her daughter's governess, Therese Belivet, at Miss Carol's plantation, Belle Aird. How might they fare in their ill-named era, Reconstruction?
Please note that despite a 19th Century southern woman's marital status, she would affectionately, yet still respectfully, be addressed Miss Carol, Miss Therese, or Miss Abby by friends, neighbors, or servants.
Also, this story takes place in a highly racist time and culture; the N-word flowed from most caucasian lips frequently without hesitation or guilt. I have a son-in-law and a granddaughter of color. I refuse to type said word; I'll work around it.
This will be an excruciatingly slow burn. It is a difficult write, and I will take a lot of time with each chapter. Thanks in advance to those willing to linger patiently with me in the fields, streams, forests, and structures of Belle Aird.
