Bucky had always been fascinated by his ma's red veins. By the yellow veins some of his teachers had. The faded black veins of Steve's ma only made him fearful... People guarded themselves from touch, until they wished to know if someone was their soulmate, if their spark ran deeper.
And all Bucky wanted to do was hug his Steve. If only they had been more careful, not as young. Maybe if they had known more.

“I know.” Steve had said, shifting Carter to rest against his chest, a hand on her bottom and the other cupping her tiny, soft head. “But I can.”

He ends up working in an art supply store, taking up embroidery, and falling head over heels for single dad Steve, a local artist who spends a suspicious amount of time picking out sketchbooks and pencils.
Being a single parent is not for the weak, faint of heart, or for anyone who likes sleep. But Steve wouldn’t trade being the dad of three year old Emmy for the world. He just wishes he could have a few conversations that aren’t about Disney princesses and legos. Too bad he screws up big time when he meets Bucky.

When he speaks, his voice comes out as a hoarse whisper. “Why…?” He swallows and starts again, trying for some semblance of normality. “...Why would you tweet something like that?!”
“If you must know, sir,” and somehow he manages to make ‘sir’ come out with the same inflection most people reserve for ‘motherfucking son of a bitch’, “it’s because I have a difficult time doing my job when my job involves monitoring the man with the best fucking ass in the United States of America.” He slowly lowers himself back into his seat until he’s at eye level, making extreme eye contact with Coulson until Coulson turns away to make mortified eye contact in Natasha’s general direction through the one-way glass. Natasha would take another picture, if she weren’t too busy catching Steve’s red-faced sputtering. “Sometimes, I vent to my Twitter followers. Sometimes, it’s about hot men with washboard abs. Can I go now, or do you need a graphic description of how I pleasure myself at night?”

“Jesus!” Steve hurries forward. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.” Before he’s even halfway into the room, the man’s already on his feet and turning around. He has a face as perfect as his ass. High forehead, square jaw, pink lips with a hint of a natural pout. Short, wavy, dark brown hair. His wide, deep-set eyes are a clear and luminous gray. Those eyes widen as the man takes in the sight of Steve staring at him.
Something about that wide-eyed, slightly nervous look catches at Steve’s memory. “Bucky?”
Steve remembers a shy, sweet teenager, with soft round cheeks, eyes too big for his face, and a wild head of hair. If this really is Bucky, some time in the last few years, he grew into his face and is now so gorgeous that Steve’s having a little trouble breathing. The lean, toned body beautifully displayed by a black shirt and gray pants don’t help the breathing situation either.
“You… have a beard now,” Bucky says faintly.

The hospital wing looks exactly the same as it did two days ago, Steve notes. There are a few beds that had been full that are now empty and a few beds that had been empty that are now full, but other than that its the same high, arching ceilings, the same teal privacy curtains, and the same wrought iron, candle yielding chandeliers above.
Madam Pomfrey is the same too, if not a little more exasperated when she sees Steve this time. “Steven,” she tuts, rushing to his side with her wand already drawn and a healing charm on her lips. Her brow furrows when she doesn’t immediately see any jelly-fingers, broken bones, or mysterious goo oozing from places it shouldn’t be, and she fixes Steve with a curious look. “What’s happened to you this time?” She questions sternly, quirking a brow and setting her wrists against her hips.
