He felt The Count tighten his grip on Birch’s hands, “Whatever you’ve done, I’ll understand, my dear.”
Birch met The Count’s eyes. A conversation from lifetimes ago replayed in his mind—a moment of vulnerability in a castle, a home vastly different from this one, where he had spilled secrets as easily as he spilled blood. There was a world’s worth of agony in The Count’s stare, a burden only understood by someone who truly cared.

Stan let out an exasperated laugh. “I’d fucking hope not. I wouldn't want that fate on my worst enemy, especially not these kids.” His hands tightened around the bars of the rail. “They're better. They're everything you all wished I was. Well, except my youngest. Kid’s a little shit, you know how I was.”
Ford hadn't had the chance to read the name plastered on the boat. No longer did Stan name it what he thought he would. The Worthwhile. “These kids,” Stan continued, seeming to give no heed to Ford’s realization. “After that happened, it's like I put on glasses. Except I couldn't figure out whether everything was blurry or clear. Now?” They heard the distant laughter of Stan's family on the boat, surely a future memory they'll look back on fondly.
“I think I’m finally seeing things clearly for once.”
