Buck stood in the greeting card aisle like it was a minefield. Rows of glossy, pastel-colored sentiments stared back at him, each more saccharine than the last.
His fingers hovered over one with a watercolour bouquet, then dropped like dead weight to his side. He shouldn’t be here.
But he couldn’t stop thinking about her—Athena.
He was fooling himself, wasn’t he? Thinking he could belong to someone like Athena. She was strong and righteous and fierce. He was a bleeding wound of a man, stitched together with borrowed strength from the people who kept loving him anyway.
Athena didn’t need that. She didn’t need him.
Or, Buck can fight fires and face death, but saying “Happy Mother’s Day” to Athena? That’s terrifying. He’s not her son, not really, but on a day meant for mothers, Buck dares to wonder if maybe, just maybe, he’s hers anyway.

Buck’s halfway through his second beer, aimlessly scrolling through TikTok when a conversation behind the bar catches his ear. He looks up and tries to get the bartender’s attention when he’s near, gesturing to get him to come towards him. “Hey, Brandon?” Brandon takes a step to the right and closer to Buck. “Did I hear that right? You guys are looking for someone to fill in on Thursday for entertainment?”
“Yeah, our usual guy cancelled. Apparently he can’t do his Thursdays anymore. Shame, too. He really brought in the crowds. Why? D’you know anyone?” Buck nods and opens Spotify to show Brandon. "Oli? Shit, yeah. I have 5 of his songs. You know him, Buckley?"
"I'm Oli."

“Where are the ducks?”
Eddie took himself out of his head once more, looking down to his son and following the boy’s line of sight. He was looking at Buck’s jeep, Eddie letting out a weighted sigh for it.
All of his coworkers had been welcoming, accepting Eddie right into their little family. Well, all of them except one that was. Buck had made it clear from day one that he didn’t want anything to do with Eddie, for whatever reason. It was fine with Eddie, really. Evan Buckley had no lasting effects on him.
“What ducks are you talking about bud?”
Chris looked up to him, all but rolling his eyes.
“Dad, every jeep has ducks.” He might has well have added a ‘duh’ at the end, Eddie holding his hands up in mock defense for not knowing such things. Why the fuck would jeeps have ducks?
Chris, with all the exasperation a seven-year-old could muster, looked up to him once more. “Look it up dad. It’s a thing.”
While Eddie wasn’t convinced, he assured Chris he would.

Buck doesn’t have any ducks for his jeep. Eddie decides to fix that. AKA 5 times Eddie secretly leaves ducks for Buck, and the one time he hands one right to him.

Just as Eddie finally finds the courage to ask Buck out on a date, an old friend of Buck's shows up and their relationship is deep. Eddie tries to stay hopeful but with a potential long-lost love standing in the way, he knows he has to do what's best for Buck no matter what. Even if that means letting him go.

Buck turned to see Eddie stood there, his eyes not quite meeting Buck as he handed out a package. Raising his brows, Buck reached out cautiously, taking the box in his hands, letting his fingers brush against Eddie’s for longer than was necessary.
“What is it?”
Eddie gave that stern look of his, the one he usually reserved for Christopher when it was time to put the video games away, the man crossing his arms together. “Just open it.”
Ok Eddie; keep your secrets.
Buck took out his pocket knife, using it to cut the tape off before putting it back in place. He carefully opened the package, shaking out the contents into his hands. After pulling off the bubble wrap that surrounded it, Buck took the item into hand, instantly noting its’ sturdiness.
“You—you bought me a clipboard?”
