Bradley is Maverick’s child. There’s nothing he could ever do to replace Goose, and he didn’t do half as good a job as his best friend would have done. However, Maverick soothed nightmares and nursed fevers, negotiated during tantrums and cheered at every baseball game. And while Maverick did a lot of things wrong, you can pry parenthood out of his burned-in corpse. He loves his kid, and all he’s ever wanted is for Bradley to be whole and happy.
And maybe that starts with a real, honest conversation that is long overdue.

Her birthday was always the worst.
The anniversary of her death was manageable. It had been a day that Bradley was anticipating with dread, but it had been expected. Watching her finally close her eyes and take her last breath had come with an ugly mix of emotions. Pain, at never hearing her voice again. Relief, that she was no longer in pain. Selfish relief, that he was released from the burden of watching her deteriorate. Guilt, at the relief. And all together, it was Bradley’s grief. That terrible grief that had him clutching her lifeless hand, hours after it began to stiffen and Hospice hadn’t arrived, and - oh god, his mother was dead. Carole Bradshaw would never again make whole the lives of those around her.
All of the horrible people in the world, and the beautiful shining light that was Carole Bradshaw, was out.

“I’m your mentee?” Jake teases, smirking lightly. “And you talk about me enough that your wife wants to meet me?”
“You can continue to be a pain in my ass,” Beau sighs, looking up at the ceiling. “Or, you can take the offer of a free dinner with a beautiful and intellectually stimulating woman.”
“Oh, I definitely want to see this side of Cyclone,” Jake grins. “Domesticated.”
“You’re bordering on impertinence.”
“Me? Never.”
“Let’s go back to when you respected me and my position.”
Jake appears to settle down, but only slightly. He clears his throat and squares his shoulders. “I’d be honored to attend dinner with your family, Admiral. Just tell me a date and time.”

Summary
The Night's Watch is behind her, her brother beside her. Theon holds clothes in his arms, and the Lord Commander keeps his eyes trained on the dragons in the courtyard. Daenerys clears her throat, before letting her voice ring out loud and clear with:
“DRACARYS.”
Rhaegal and Drogon open their jaws. Heat fills the courtyard, warm as a Dornish beach, when they breathe identical showers of fire upon the pyre. It engulfs Jon’s body, and Melisandre’s voice calls as clearly as Dany’s did, high Valyrian falling from her lips. Even without the dragon’s continuing to breathe their fire, the courtyard heats further and the flames of the fire grow higher with every word the Red Witch speaks.
Sansa watches, eyes locked on her husband's body, and waits.
Melisandre finishes, collapsing on her knees before the pyre. Jon’s body remains still, and Sansa’s heart falls to pieces. The hope she’s been harbouring fails her now, as Jon’s body stays lying in the flames and Rhaegal gives a loud shriek, claws digging into the snow. It cannot be. It cannot be, it cannot be, it cannot-
Several shouts of surprise fill the air.
Jon’s body is rising.

Summary
There's a beat of silence. A smile blossoms on Buck's face. It starts with a twitch at the corner of his mouth, then spreads inwards. He purses his lips, almost like he's trying to contain it, then gives up and lets it bloom into a brilliant smirk, crooked and devastating on his warm lips. He cracks open one eye, the left one. The smirk creases his birthmark. It's the same shade of pink as his lips, the same color as the lightning scar.
"Oh yeah?"
Eddie clears his throat and frees his own sandwich from its plastic prison. "Eat so you don't collapse. Save us both the trouble."
He can still feel Buck's eyes on him. "I don't break that easily."

Chris is 800 miles away, and Eddie's house feels emptier than ever. As always, Buck is right there, ready to have his back, to catch him without hesitation if he falls. This is familiar, this is normal, this is the way they've always been.
