'Yes. Let’s,' El says eventually, digging her chin into Max’s shoulder so sharply it’s a reminder that they’re both present and in possession of free and as-yet-unlived lives.
And so live them they do."

As much as Perry doesn’t want to help Candace get ready, he dislikes her refusal to believe that he could.
“It’s not like you have any other options, right?”
...
Candace shrugs non-committaly. “Yeah, maybe. Whatever. I’ll see you at the party.”
“Mwah! Love you, Candy! And you too, Perry!”
Candace’s phone screen goes black as Stacy hangs up. She sighs. “Well, I guess it’s just you and me, Perry.”
Or, Candace and Perry spend the afternoon together getting ready for a Christmas party.

They have a quiet understanding. There is no love in the Fire Nation, not in Azula’s city, and certainly not between two girls. They are not in love, because love does not exist here, and even if it did, there would be no talking of it. Instead, they have a wordless bond, one that manifests in the way that Ty Lee can read Mai like a book and how Mai always knows when Ty Lee is upset. Azula’s blue fire scorches everything that could burn brighter than itself, so Mai and Ty Lee very deliberately do not burn. And if they did, they would hide that little light, hide it from the wind and the fire and the horrible storm that rages around them. But they don’t, and they aren’t, so it doesn’t matter.

She's careful about where she puts her feet, Phoenix notes, despite the casual tone. It makes for a slightly awkward stance, how she steps to avoid every square of carpet Mia's body once touched.
