Mike Wheeler is a teacher at high school, and on Valentine's Day he suddenly finds a present sitting on his desk. He's extremely worried about a student being in love with him - his best friend, crush, and Art Teacher Will Byers helps him through it.

“It’s not that bad, actually,” Will says, with a smile Mike can tell is just a bit forced. “We are both tall enough, so we still should be able to see fine.”
But looking at the people in front and around him, Mike knows that Will would have to be on his tiptoes to really see the stage, and would end up watching the show mostly from the big screens. A good boyfriend wouldn’t let that happen.
“Or…” Mike starts, with a face Will learned to fear as it would usually preface the worst of his plans, “we could push our way to the front.”

“Just saying, if you’re taking another hit, you should share it with me,” Mike says, and Will slowly tilts his head, drinking in every word. “It just makes sense. Like, mathematically.”
Will’s reddened eyes narrow, bewildered. “Mathematically?”
“If there’s two hits left, we’d each only get one,” Mike explains. “But if we shotgunned, we’d both get two.” God, this is the best idea he’s had in ages. He should’ve stolen Will’s weed, like, months ago. “That’s like, bang for your buck. This is simple math, Will Byers. Keep up.”
In which it’s well past midnight in New York, Will can’t sleep, and Mike feels like they barely know each other anymore.
So, they get a little high. Mike is very normal about all of it.

Will shakes his head, trying to clear Mike from it for the night. Only when he looks back up at Richie, Richie has this conspiratorial smile on his face, like maybe Will isn't the only one eager to piss off Mike Wheeler.

“Did something happen?” Steve asked.
“Yes.” He paused. “Well, no. It’s— it’s more like… more like… he got a boyfriend.” Mike huffed out a breath.
“I know.” Steve agreed slowly, brows raised. “Carlton. Will, Robin and I met up a while back and he introduced us. Seems like a good kid. What about him?”
Mike felt like a fucking idiot.
Of course Steve didn’t get it. Why would Steve get it?
“I… I just…” How was Mike even meant to begin to talk about this? “It’s driving me crazy, man. I hate the guy.”
OR -
Mike spirals about his feelings, gets in his car, and somehow ends up going to Steve Harrington for help. He gets a much-needed pep talk and finally goes after what he wants.

“So,” he said carefully. “Who is it?”
Will’s hands faltered.
The plate he was drying wobbled dangerously, his fingers tightening around the edges just in time to keep it from slipping and shattering on the floor. His heart jumped with it - or maybe it was the question.
“What?” he asked, too quickly. “Why- why are you asking me that now?”
Mike didn’t look at him. His eyes stayed on the sink, on the steady stream of running water over his hands.
“Because we’re best friends,” he said. “And… I don’t know. I thought maybe we should talk about it. Like we did before. You know. With me and Eleven, before we broke up.”
Will swallowed hard, wishing he could open a hole in the floor and crawl into it right now.
“It’s different,” Will said, low enough that only the two of them could hear. “Talking about you and El was… easier than talking about this.”
It's the '80s, and summer has arrived in Hawkins. Time to put on your shorts.
