Summary
Ilya asks himself how he learned to look at the stars. Someone has been there to turn them into something he can hold: Alexei when they were children, hands flying around and talking loudly enough to earn a deadly glare from the librarian as he flipped the pages; and now Shane, voice barely above a whisper, sitting with Ilya's back pressed against his chest, taking Ilya's hand in his to point up at the constellations. Ilya learned how to hold the stars. He can do it again. He knows, rationally, that Shane is finite, and he plans to prove it to himself.
Ilya is completely overwhelmed by Shane's freckles. He decides the best solution to this is to carefully count each individual one.

"I have a surprise for you," Svetlana says, locking eyes with Ilya and beaming brighter than the sun. "You remember our birthday tradition?"
"Which one?" Ilya asks.
Svetlana turns to Marley and Connors, inviting them in. "When Ilya and I were young, we would give each other two gifts on our birthdays. One was the kind of gift you are supposed to give. Good and thoughtful, like a good friend. The other was terrible! Each year we would outdo each other and outdo the last year. Remember, Ilya?"
Not even a little bit. He looks at Sveta, about to ask what exactly she's doing, when he sees the sparkle in her eyes. She's playing now, and just because he doesn't understand the game doesn't mean he can't join in.
Shane and Ilya's plans to meet up for Ilya's birthday are ruined by the Raiders plans to celebrate their captain. But plans can change and plans can be put back together.

His wedding band was on his finger.
Ilya began to, quite reasonably in his opinion, choke on his own spit.
“There’s more where that came from,” Rose said simply, grinning at walking away.
Mouth wide, eyes popping from his head, Ilya scanned the crowd for his husband. When he spotted him, he saw Shane having a conversation with his dad, his face completely blank even as his eyes flickered to Ilya for just a millisecond.
“Roz! My man, how are you?” Cliff Marleau asked as he walked over to Ilya, beaming.
