The rift, while eventually settling into a cooled, inactive state, still radiates leftover energy — Xisuma had told him that it was nothing to worry about, so Grian didn’t pay it much mind, not after everything between Hermitcraft and Empires had settled.
Weeks later, the rift spits out one last body.
Evil Xisuma had been banished to the void for an indefinite sentence. He didn’t expect an early unintentional release, one that he didn’t facilitate but knows he would reap the consequences for. He wants to run, but how long would that last? He can’t leave the server, but… surely there’s something he can do, right?
Turning yourself into a cat and finding peace in a feline retirement from villainy wasn’t his plan, but he can’t say he regrets it.

Summary
Doc prided himself on his strength, both emotionally and physically. He didn’t need to count on anyone else for anything, because he was always strong enough to handle his issues on his own. So for him, using the code word for emergency situations was completely out of the picture. Nothing was worth revealing his weakness to the others.
Of course, one accident in a prank gone wrong later, Doc might have to rethink his decision to not use the safe word and come to lean on his fellow Hermits when he can’t be strong anymore.

“What?” the guy - Tango - rolled his eyes at Grian, shaking him off with a laugh. “Maybe it hasn’t been that long since Double Life, but forgive me if I’ve missed the guy. You get to see Scar every day. It’s not even–”
“Er, sorry, but–” Jimmy interrupted him, waiting until Tango’s focus was back on him before pulling on a polite smile and carrying on, “–who are you?”
OR: When the Hermits arrive on Empires, Tango remembers his soulmate...but Jimmy doesn't remember him back.

Jimmy feels like he might as well give up on even trying at this point if every single death game will end in him dying first. And it will, he knows that now. He should have known - perhaps he had known - back when his wings had come in during Third Life. It was his second time as a canary, second after Evo. Twice might be a coincidence, but three times is a pattern, and four just feels like someone is trying to send him a message.
"I'm the canary. A canary in a coal mine, the first to die, every time. I'm cursed. And this time around, I managed to curse you too. Don't you get that?"
"You're not cursed, Jimmy," Tango tells him, as if it's the truth of the universe. "And even if you were-" he grips him by both shoulders then, smiling all the while, and shakes him slightly as if to knock some of the tension from him. "I'm still not leaving you alone here. I'm your soulmate, like hell am I gonna abandon you just because we lost a game."
Or: How about hybrid-shifter!Jimmy? Jimmy who takes on a different hybrid form depending on the server? Jimmy who can’t control what he becomes, but has changed enough times over the years that he knows how to handle it...until he doesn't?

When it crashes in the mesa, only one player is around to hear it.OR: A strange spaceship crash lands in the mesa beyond the borders of Tumble Town, and Sheriff Jimmy races to the crash site to save the pilot from the wreck. The pilot in question looks a little too familiar to be a stranger...though Jimmy can't quite put his finger on why.

Summary
Jimmy sighed softly, adjusting his wings to take some pressure off an aching point near his spine.
He missed Tango, was the truth of it. He knew his soulmate was on the same server as him, not even that far away with how small the map felt this season, but it still felt too far. Especially after the lone, brief exchange they’d had earlier in the rush of the game–
Teasing and bickering across a small stretch of water, Joel killing the cow, Etho spinning the boat around to face him, Tango leaping across the water to get a better view. Then Jimmy had rushed forward, had elbowed Tango aside, had only realized his mistake when he caught Tango’s stumbled, half-wincing landing out of the corner of his eye. He had cast a sheepish smile back over his shoulder, tossed back an apology - “Sorry, rancher!” - and their eyes, however briefly, had met. Tango had grinned, had laughed, had looked almost proud, and then threatened his life with a smile and wink. Then Jimmy and Joel had fled, and Etho had watched them go, and then…
Jimmy withheld another sigh and sat up, rolling his shoulders and his head to dispel the crick in his neck. There was no way he could sleep like this.

Summary
The world is full of magic, and those who can use it. Some people (hybrids and not) can harness that magical energy and use it to their advantage. Some hybrids have specific magical abilities and can only use magic within their species skillset. (Aetherborns can heal, blazeborns can wield fire...enderians can teleport from location to location.) But alongside these, there are also those with the ability to wield and control magic in a way that is only limited by their creativity and the strength of their magical core.
Witches and familiars exist as two sides of a similar coin, with both having magical abilities of their own. Familiars are also gifted the genetic ability to transform into a specific animal (whether fully or partially) and they have a skill most others do not: they can channel and amplify other mages' magic to strengthen spells. When bound together via a magebond, a witch and familiar with the right magical chemistry can become a powerful force to be reckoned with.
Most mages use magic in day-to-day life for nothing more than everyday tasks...but some have more ambitious endeavours in mind.

Summary
Etho had only discovered how disliked witches and their familiars were after already setting foot in the town, and with both of them being newcomers, there were too many curious eyes on them from the second they arrived. Bdubs had been riding in owl form on Etho's shoulder for the most recent part of the trip, his tiny form tucked up against the fluff of Etho's hood with his talons tightly gripping the fabric of his magebond's jacket. He had intended to turn back to his human form (or at least an avian one) once they arrived in town.
But the signs were clear from the moment they stepped past the border. The banning of witches from most inns and taverns, the refusal of service to hybrids and those of non-overworld descent. They would have to be careful. Right?

OR: When Etho and Bdubs have to spend the night in a town that isn't friendly toward their kind, Bdubs has no choice but to remain in owl form until they get back to their room...and Etho takes (amused) advantage of the situation.

Summary
The Nether and The Overworld rarely interact. All known portals connecting to the two were inactive and had faded from the populous' memory. Even though there have been tales of such a thing, most don’t seek out cross-dimensional travel so the portals that remained were left broken and unlit. There was a reason for that sort of thing; The Nether was a cruel and unkind place.
While Jimmy, Joel, and Grian were hanging out together, they found a ruined portal. They had the amazing idea of fixing it up, lighting it, and seeing what happened despite having no knowledge about what could be on the other side. Jimmy went through the portal, a ghast destroyed the portal's frame, and he was stranded in a place unfamiliar and strange. All hope seemed lost until a certain Nether resident offered his assistance in getting Jimmy home.
