He waits. His father turns, sits in the huge chair at the back of the mostly empty hall, and taps his fan against his chin and tilts his head.

“Jiujiu, jiujiu no,” His nephew cries, “You can’t-ah!” The words stop, and become a wail of pain, and the actual specifics of those words do not compute until a few seconds later, after he throws open the door to Jin Ling’s room to see Jingyi on top of him on the bed, Jin Ling’s pants around his thighs and ass in the air, with Jingyi balls deep inside of him.
They look at him like a pair of deer caught in the headlights, and he takes a step toward them only for Jingyi to scramble back and away, pulling out, putting the bed between himself and Jiang Cheng and putting his hands up, “Okay, I know that sounds really bad, but I promise-”
The words he’d heard finally crystallize clearly in Jiang Cheng’s brain halfway to winding up to punch the young man squarely in the face, and he forcefully relaxes his fist, realizing that maybe he doesn’t fully understand what’s happening here. “What did you say to your Jiujiu?” Rulan asks as he enters the room, tone suspicious, only moments after Wanyin’s hasty exit, “Do I need to go plead your case for remaining in possession of working legs?”
Jin Ling balks at the accusation, “I didn’t say anything! This is not my fault.” He says defensively.
Rulan sets down Jin Ling’s now clean sword and pauses, taking him in. He raises both eyebrows, “Are you hard? Why are you hard?” The accusation in his tone is not gone.
Jin Ling presses a hand down over his - barely - tented robes with a scowl, “Oh, for fuck’s sake, how can you even tell?” Rulan gives him a look that plainly says ‘I’m you, stupid.’ and Jin Ling huffs at him, “This really isn’t my fault.” He insists, “He kissed me!”
A case of mistaken identity forces Jiang Cheng to finally confront the fact that one of his most important relationships has always been incest, as much as he would like to deny and ignore that fact.

“I’m almost nineteen.” Jin Ling says sullenly, “I don’t think most of the people my age are lying anymore.” He flops dramatically backward onto his bed, glaring over at Rulan.
Rulan sighs, stepping away from the bedpost and towards the low desk, sitting behind it and pulling a blank stack of talismans out of the sleeve of his discarded robe. He sets things up for drawing new talismans as he answers, “No, probably not. But need I remind you about how old my Jiujiu was?”
Jin Ling grumbles something unintelligible in response, and makes himself comfortable in bed, arranging his pillow behind him and kicking the covers aside, “Everyone I want is in a relationship or related to me or both.” Jin Ling huffs, and Rulan looks up from his talismans, “Mostly they’re related to me.” He finishes with a frustrated sigh.
Jin Ling the younger pushes some boundaries, and Rulan fails to effectively enforce them. Probably because he doesn't really want to.

“Jin Guangyao?” He asks in bewilderment, stepping aside and opening the door wider, a nonverbal invitation to enter. Guangyao bows shallowly and steps inside, but he hovers near the door.
“Wei Wuxian,” He greets, “I can’t stay, I’m afraid. There’s too much to do, with the wedding so soon. I… shouldn’t even be here, really.” He holds out a purple pamphlet, identical to the invitation Wuxian had received months earlier, “But I needed to deliver this.”
Wuxian looks at the pamphlet in confusion, then back up at Guangyao, “I’ve already gotten my invitation.”
Guangyao shakes his head, “It’s not for you.” He holds it further out, “It’s for Rulan.”
Jin Ling wallows in his self-inflicted misery, Jiang Cheng finds some comfort in his husband-to-be, and Jin Guangyao schemes, just a little bit, because sometimes things that are broken really need not stay that way.

Jiang Cheng looks up at him, an eyebrow raised, “Hm?”
“I love you.” Jiang Ling repeats, and Jiang Cheng looks away awkwardly, continuing to peel seeds.
He coughs, “Oh. Um, I love you, too, A-Ling.” His answer is unpracticed but genuine, and Jiang Ling lets it warm him, even the stumbling nature of it. His jiujiu has never been good with explicit expressions of affection. Never been good with words in general, really.
Jiang Cheng hands him another lotus seed, not looking at him as he peels the next one.
It’s an impulse, a foolish one, but Jiang Ling can’t help it this time, can’t keep his love in any longer, and he reaches forward to still Jiang Cheng’s hands with a light touch.
“No, Jiujiu.” He waits for the eye contact again, the confusion, before enunciating clearly, stressing it, “I love you.”
Jiang Ling knows now that he was always meant to be by Jiang Cheng's side. He's never once regretted not returning to the Jin sect. He won't regret it, ever, whether or not Jiang Cheng loves him the same way.

His nephew stands up abruptly, turning for the door, “It doesn’t matter what you say, Jiujiu,” He throws over his shoulder, uncharacteristically quiet and flat for words of defiance spoken from this particular mouth. He sounds tired, far too tired for a teenager. It reminds Jiang Cheng of himself, during the war. After it. “I’m not going back.”
Jin Ling follows Jiang Cheng back to Lotus Pier after Guanyin Temple, and refuses to leave. Despite the Jin sect waiting for his return and appointment as Jin-Zongzhu, Jiang Cheng doesn't have the heart to make him.

He ignores the way his stomach twists with anticipation and arousal at the sight Jin Ling makes, forces himself to move again, to turn and walk towards the door, to leave his nephew to his rut, to deal with it himself as he clearly already has been, probably all night, hence the smell in the room and the fact that he’d been asleep so late into the day.

A hand shoots out from behind him and slides it shut before he can step through, and before he can get out a whole word of protest, his breath is knocked out of him as he’s slammed up against the wall next to the door, chest colliding harshly with the wood and forehead cushioned from the impact by a considerate hand between him and the solid wall.
Well. That’s a good sign. Maybe he can still be reasoned with to let Jiang Cheng leave.
“Jin Ling.” He snarls, “Get the fuck off of me.”
His nephew, predictably, does not listen.
Jiang Cheng barges in on Jin Ling in the middle of his rut. Jin Ling doesn't want to let him leave.

Xichen is fairly certain now that he knows what’s going on. Sizhui is twenty, after all. He’s always been a bit of a late bloomer, likely due to years spent malnourished and surrounded by malignant energy, but even for a late bloomer, twenty is late for a first rut or heat. They’d all assumed by now that he was probably a beta, given the lack of a mating cycle, but it seems that they were all wrong.
“Does it itch?”
“Huh?” Sizhui says, absently.

Like Jiang Cheng doesn’t know what he was going to say, doesn’t know the way Jin Ling looks at him, has looked at him for years, the way he leaves little kisses on the parts of Jiang Cheng’s body he’s allowed to touch in these few days of closeness twice a year, because Jiang Cheng won’t allow him his mouth. The way he cuddles up to his Jiujiu the rest of the year, too close, always toeing the line of what Jiang Cheng will permit, will consider to be platonic and acceptable.

Zixuan waves off his apology and thanks him, then turns to Jin Ling, standing just behind him. He nods to the stairs, “Shall we?”
