It had always been difficult to distinguish between forcing himself out of obligation and simply being anxious. Kind of hard to tell when attraction isn’t a factor. But it was likely the latter. The Fortress of Meropide was, actually, quite an interesting experience compared to this prison of fatigued muscles and wandering mind. That was a real punishment for someone like him.
Not that there was a reason for him to be punished from the very beginning!
After Skirk throws Childe through the rift of the Abyss, he finds himself in the exact same place he vanished from ten years ago—the forest near his home in Morepesok. It seems like the perfect place for him to recover after what had been the longest and most gruelling fight of his life.
But the road to recovery is never easy, and the consequences of that battle may prove more difficult than Childe ever imagined.

He pushes his hands into his pockets, takes a deep breath and a step forward, and says, “I’m, uh, I’m Arthur.”
Gwen is still staring. The guy doesn’t move.
“Yeah, man,” he then says, speaking slowly, as though Arthur were dim, “we know who you are.”
This interaction, Arthur is fairly certain, is not unfolding like a successful, normal, human interaction should. Already fed-up with his own cursed attempt at livening-up his insanity spiral with a detour into the Real World, he grits his teeth, half-ready to stalk back off to the car and depart.
“My name is Merlin,” Ears then says, suddenly. “This is Gwen. Sorry, it’s just—what the hell are you doing here?”

“You’re more restless tonight.”
He tries not to turn and look at some of the overly-familiar scars adorning Diluc’s skin as he speaks. “I didn’t mean to wake you. Just lost in thought.”
Diluc’s refute is near instant, even while sleep remains in arm’s reach: “That’s unusual for you.”
Often, the tenderness that comes from a dark sky is softer with Diluc. More hesitant. Childe tends to guide his hands in the dark, remind him that he's allowed to hold on for the entirety of the evening. Drags Diluc's fingers up to Childe's own cheeks, or across his wrist to feel his pulse. No, mornings are not their only moment of rest. Every moment they have alone is precious, tucked away somewhere safe in Childe's heart, behind his ribcage and his flesh. It’s simply that dawn carries hope in it’s open, generous palms, while nightfall nurses feelings to fruition indiscriminately—and tonight in particular, as Childe stares out at Mondstadt through Diluc's windows, he thinks on how none of what he sees is actually his.

Summary
It’s been a little over a month since Diluc returned to Mondstadt, and rumors of a mysterious Darknight Hero started to spread. He isn’t fond of the title, but Diluc’s found a way to serve Mond on his own terms, and he isn’t going to let go of it just yet. When the Knights of Favonius are eerily quiet after a group of adventurers go missing in Dragonspine, Diluc resolves to climb the storming mountain and find them himself.
But nothing goes to plan. As he runs into the Eleventh Fatui Harbinger while searching the mountain, Diluc is confronted with the revenge he thought he gave up, and begins to question if this whole Darknight Hero business is flawed to begin with.
