They are cynical people, they struggle to survive in a scary and cruel world, but deep down in their hearts, they feel very lonely and just need someone by their side.
People treat them differently because of the powerful superpowers they possess. They were pushed before the beast's claws and forced to fight because they were different, because they were stronger. Behind them, people call them "freaks".
But you know they're not freaks. They were just children who yearned for a peaceful life and were afraid of monsters, just like everyone else.
Because of the strange bond between you and them, you decide to accompany these new friends. Your relationship with them is getting closer and closer.

You were never anything special.. Well you could create perplexing and staggering worlds in your head, writing them onto paper and taking the breath away from those who may read your work. You always went to tell tales to kids at the libraries you occasionally volunteer to read at or entertain the elderly at nursing homes by sharing your adventurous worlds with them. Your.. friend.. Payton offered to let you stay with her and her.. friends? boyfriends? while in college when you were looking for a place to live.. She said you could if you paid a small amount of rent and made her a character in your oncoming book.. (you're just gonna kill her off in chapter 10 or something) And that's how you ended up staying with a bitch and a couple of monster skeletons who were head over heels for her but assholes to you.

The Reader was a normal human when monsters emerge from Mt. Ebott. Five years later, she is separated from her family and barely surviving on a day to day basis. She is a Green Mage, acquired by the state, forced into the duty of rescuing those around her. She doesn't hate her job.
She hates that's it's forced upon her.
Blueberry had been on his morning jog when he stumbled upon the scene of a human about to commit suicide. Despite his efforts, the human succeeds and it causes Blueberry to go into shock. It's the Reader's job to help Blueberry deal with his trama. Too bad there are politics involved, mucking up your job.
TLDR: Blue gets hurt, Reader heals him and ends up in a skeletal pile.
