Summary
Nancy’s first mistake was letting Steve handle the roommate ad.
ROOMMATE WANTED. Shared apartment in downtown Hawkins, with your own bedroom and large closet. Ideal candidate is fun, neat, and employed. Blondie fan a plus.
It ended with Steve’s name and number. All good, at least on the surface. In the days after it ran, she repeatedly asked Steve if they’d had any bites, but he waved her off. It was a week before he finally told her to clear her Sunday, because she’d be holding interviews and tours at the apartment.
She didn’t realize her second mistake until later, which was not asking Steve for a list of names.
In the end, she had only herself to blame when she opened the door at the first knock of the day, a polite smile already in place, and came face to face with the last person on Earth she’d expected to see back in Hawkins.
OR: Nancy needs a roommate; Robin needs a place to crash. The only problem is that Nancy's been secretly in love with Robin for years.

Summary
“Robin hates having people over,” Steve eyed her skeptically. “‘Cause of the stuff with her mom. She’s kind of…rude to Rob in front of other people.”
Something hot and tight snapped in Nancy’s chest.
“I’m going to talk to her.”
“To – Rob?” Steve asked, eyeing Nancy warily. This wasn’t color-coded notes, scheduled study sessions, long-term goals, strategic Nancy Wheeler. This was sawed-off-shotgun, eyes blazing, ask forgiveness not permission, protect the people she loved Nancy Wheeler, and both of them knew it.
“To her mom,” Nancy said firmly, and Steve groaned audibly.
OR
One thing that Nancy Wheeler won't stand for is anyone hurting the people she cares about. Not monsters, not psychic psychopaths, not well-intentioned mothers.

"I'm just still like in a weird limbo between finding your adeptness with a gun really kinda hot and still being like, you know, gun equals dangerous which equals very bad! So, maybe just a little warning next time I might stumble upon a deadly weapon, please?" Robin pleads. "Especially considering the fact that if anything goes down, I'm the one who is gonna have to toss the thing to you since I somehow keep ending up holding your bag!"
Or
The gun in Nancy's handbag is actually the least surprising thing in her bag that day.

Summary
“Is that ok?” Robin whispers.
“Is what ok?”
“This,” she says, nodding in Nancy’s direction. “Are you ok with this?”
“I don’t know. But.. I think I feel–”
“So fucking good, huh?”
Nancy bursts into a short laugh. “All your poetry just went down the drain.”
“Well,” Robin says matter-of-factly, “it’s the truth isn’t it?”
Nancy pauses to breathe in Robin’s scent. She smells like her denim jacket and the slightest touch of shampoo and – maybe she’s imagining this – sweet honey. Whatever this thing is that’s fluttering in her chest – “I don’t want it to stop,” she says.
------
Nancy and Robin are scared to be alone right now, although technically, there's no one else in the house. Silence leads to talking leads to something more.

Nancy grins. “You’re a proper dad, aren’t you?”
“Oh God, are you attracted to dads?” Robin gasps, her eyes wide. “Do I look like an old man?”
“You do not look like an old man, Robin.”
“Phew, thank God.” Robin smiles and Nancy swears there’s nothing purer in this world. “Wait, you still didn’t answer the first question; I’m worried now.”
“I am not attracted to dads.”

Summary
Eventually they reached the parking garage, where Robin pointed out Nancy’s car. “Whoa, Indiana plates!”
Nancy bit back a laugh. “You know what my car looks like.”
“Yeah, but that’s the beginning and end of the list of things I’m going to recognize for the next few days.”
“Feeling homesick?”
“Not anymore,” Robin said, so earnestly that she couldn’t have been talking about the license plate. Nancy blushed.

Summary
Robin hoped she looked as cool as she hoped she sounded. Cool as a cucumber. She hoped she hadn't said that out loud. It wasn't really actionable advice.
She felt kind of cool, her inner and outer monologues notwithstanding. It was cool, to be the person strolling the fairgrounds of the Hawkins Halloween Spooktacular Fall Fair with Nancy Wheeler. And the weather was cool and crisp, and the sky was clear and dark, and Nancy's nose was a little pink, and Robin wanted to kiss it.

Summary
"Your room is so pink," Robin said.
"Was this, like... Did you pick this color when you were younger and just never changed it or are you just, I don't know, very committed to pink?" She couldn't stop talking.
Nancy lowered her book and rolled over on her side. Looked at Robin, seriously. Studiously.
"I like pink," she said.
