Summary
A monster hunt gone wrong leaves Jaskier lifeless in a grave and Geralt with a piece of his heart missing. Geralt isn’t sure how to function in a world without Jaskier’s sunny smile and sweet voice, but it might be a tad easier to learn if Jaskier would just stop appearing in his dreams already. However, when his dreams start corresponding with reality, Geralt thinks that perhaps the bard is still somehow alive out there. Perhaps Jaskier is connecting with him through some magical lifeline. Perhaps Geralt won’t have to say goodbye, after all.
Or perhaps Geralt has finally gone insane.

Jaskier didn’t flinch from her scorn and Geralt could see his knuckles go white with the force of his grip around the small vial. “Save him.”
The mage stared at him for a beat before letting out a burst of laughter that echoed off the wall like the flutter of vultures wings. “All this trouble for the Witcher?” she asked incredulously, “Tell me, boy, do you really think he would do the same for you? That he cares at all what happens to the bard who follows after him like a lost puppy?” She stepped forward, confident as a soldier preparing his death blow. “Oh, I know who you are, bard. I watched you trailing after the Witcher, eager for every scrap of affection or interest he’ll toss your way. I’ve seen the way you look at him.”
Jaskier was breathing heavily now, jaw clenched tight enough that Geralt could see the muscles fluttering with effort.
“Were you hoping this ill-conceived rescue mission would be enough to make him finally notice you?” she murmured with a mocking smile, “Poor little bard--always singing of love but never truly experiencing it.”

Geralt seizes on his brother in arms, near desperate for someone who might know what to do. “He’s sick. He’s, he’s coughing, feverish--”
“How long?” The older Witcher looks like he does before battle, steady and fierce.
“I, I’m not sure.” Abruptly, Jaskier’s early night has all manner of new meanings. Had he been feeling poorly that long? His brow furrows. “He sounded like he was having trouble breathing last night.”

Summary
In books and songs, there are always clues that warn the audience that a great tragedy is about to occur. A spot of blood against the clean floor. A broken window, perhaps, or a darkened home. Their hearts would race with anticipation only to gasps as the true horror unfolded.
For Jaskier, the tragedy looked like this:
Two bodies moving awkwardly off the tumbled bedspread.
Dark hair tumbling over shoulders bared by a shirt that was far too large for a woman’s body.
Familiar scars left behind by a life of war joined now by a deep bruise along one collarbone in the shape of a mouth.
Yellow eyes meeting his with agony marring their depths—too much emotion to belong to the man responsible for the way Jaskier’s chest seemed collapse around the shards of his broken heart.

Summary
At the start of the winter at Kaer Morhen, Coën watched the Wolves shed their wariness and relax from being individual witchers into being a pack. They pounced on each other in playful attacks and kept some kind of elaborate scoring system about it. They grabbed hold of one another’s arms to get someone’s attention or make a point. They even tussled in the hot springs, all that naked skin sliding together. They knew each other well enough to understand what was wanted without conversation.
Coën watched all that and felt it like an ache, like his skin was bruised from not being touched.

His advanced composition students are perhaps less interested in his artistic process than they are in his muse, the famous White Wolf. But as Jaskier lectures about the many artistic liberties he takes with the truth, who should show up but the subject of Jaskier’s recent, regrettable song, “Burn, Butcher, Burn?” It’s the famous witcher Geralt of Rivia, whom Jaskier last saw at the top of a certain dragon-infested mountain. Geralt has come to tell Jaskier how he feels about this latest composition.

Keira takes another sip of her tea and Jaskier feels the irrational urge to slap the cup right out of her hand if she continues marking unnecessary pauses in her explanation. "We believe Eskel to be under a similar curse."

There’s another cough. It’s louder this time, and deeper still, and Geralt turns his head, trying to peer into the rubble. He opens his mouth, but Jaskier’s name sticks in his throat, his tongue still coated with dust. Grit crunches between his molars as he swallows.
“J’sk’r?”
He hears the shifting of rocks, and the scratch of silk against craggy stone. It’s quickly followed by a mumbled groan of pain. The noise is weak, but so oddly close that Geralt flinches at the sound. Without thinking, he stretches his hand out, the sleeve of his tunic scraping along the floor until his fingertips brush against warm flesh.
“Jaskier?” he tries again, more urgently.
