    He had come here to avenge his brother. To prove he was worthy of the name Ingenium. To make Stain pay for disabling the greatest person he’d ever known—a true hero, selfless and unshakable and good.

    And instead, he was going to die nameless. Pinned like garbage in a filthy side street. Manual didn’t know where he was. There was no backup. No emergency alert. He hadn’t even been missed yet.

    He wasn’t going to save anyone. He wasn’t going to die with honor. He wasn’t going to die remembered.

    He would shroud himself in snide insults to protect himself from the world, only the thorns meant to be his greatest protection, would become his greatest weakness. His bitterness and self-hatred would cloud his mind, forever a scourge and a plague on him.

    But in this life, Albion collapses on a weirwood, his blood spilling into the roots of a heart tree, and with a prayer on his lips. The Old Gods take notice.
