She meant it as a joke, but it sparked an idea. Not a pocket in the Fade, no, and maybe he couldn’t get her mind to settle completely but it was certainly a goal to work towards. A suddenly enticing goal. All he’d need was her consent, a decent chunk of time and four walls away from the Lighthouse.

“You don’t have a bed in your room either,” Emmrich shot back, hearing the pettiness in his voice but unable to do anything about it.
“At least I have a couch! With cushions!” Rook rose to a sitting position with a grumble, looking around Emmrich’s room with a searching eye. “How about the floor?
“I am not,” Emmrich said, in the tones of grievously wounded dignity, “having sex on the floor."

“Did you know the physiological effects of fear and arousal are much the same?” He leaned closer, inhaling the eucalyptus scent of her hair. Rook tugged weakly on the door handle, but he held firm. Emmrich could practically feel the heat of her blush radiating, even from behind her. “Shallow breaths.” He ran two fingers up her spine, moving her heavy curls over her shoulder before pressing them to the pulse point just below her jaw. “Elevated heart rate.” The beat pounded below his fingertips perfectly as he tightened his grip on her neck and leaned closer to kiss the nape. A small whimper escaped her lips. He grinned against her skin. “Involuntary sounds.”
“Emm…” she whispered, trembling.
Emmrich used his grip on her throat to spin her to face him, caging her smaller body against the door. “Dilated pupils,” he observed. “My sweet Renya..." He enjoyed the way she had to crane her neck to look him in the eye. “When you learned that it was I who cornered you in the Necropolis all those years ago, did it change how you viewed the memory?” He leaned in to run his teeth along her delicately pointed ear. “Does it excite you now, little rabbit?”

“I suppose we can focus on skeletal and venous formations for now. You will respond with the major arteries and skeletal structures as I point to them. Feel free to add any pertinent information, and don’t be afraid to admit to any gaps in your education. I am here to guide you, after all.” He smiled gently as those wicked fingers of his slid up and down her forearm gently.

So Rook fell silent, heart pounding wildly. “I am much older than you. It is why I didn’t fall on my knees for you the moment I met you in the Necropolis and your earnest compliment of my helm made me blush like a schoolboy. How could such a bold, daring, beautiful young woman ever return my affections?”
Oh. Oh…
Emmrich continued, and his fingers tightened on her hip almost possessively. “Rook. Renya.” She shuddered at the use of her given name. “If there is any hope for a foolish old man, would you tell me?” He traced her cheekbone, down her neck, coming to a rest to cup the back of her head. “The beautiful blushes you favor me with, do they mean you feel the same way? Or that you are too shy to tell me no?”
