“I just figured you were weirdly small. Do Watchers have runts?” Xander asked only half-mockingly, eyebrows raising at the immediate response.
“Excuse me!? I am perfectly average-sized for a—” Xelqua stopped.
“...For a what?”
“...For a,” The Watcher hunched into itself and checked over its shoulder. Which was completely unnecessary, considering Watchers can always see in all directions, “...Player.”
The last word was whispered so quietly that Xander had to strain to hear it, and even then he questioned if he’d heard it right.
“You’re a Player?” Xander asked incredulously, part insulted that it would try to fool him and part horrified that that was a possibility in the first place.
---(Xelqua is a new Watcher. Xander, fondly known to many as Evil Xisuma, is a new prisoner of the Watchers. Neither of them want to be there.)

Scar and grian are best friends who share an apartment and work at the same university. Scar is kind and caring, a natural caretaker who doesn't mind the burden that is Grian whatsoever. In fact, he enjoys being around grian.
Grian was forced into a lot of stuff by Sam during YHS, and the trauma of the unhealthy relationship has made him put off and disgusted by romance and excessive romantic affection. His mental health is awful, but at least his best friend is there for him.

Summary
Grian's voice is soft and inquisitive when he speaks. “Now, what’s this about? What’s wrong all of a sudden?”
He likes when his voice gets like this, when he talks to Scar like he’s a human despite not knowing he can understand every word he says, when he treats their one-sided conversations as actual conversations, even if the language isn't there.
‘My best friend left me’, he says. ‘He’s trying to find our family. Or get rich. I don’t know, whichever comes first, I guess. And you and Mumbo are my only friends. But I can't talk to you! And I did it to myself! It's all just so...' He forgets the word for ‘annoying’ in dolphin, so he trails off. ‘Annoying’ isn’t even the right word. It hurts. It's killing him.
There’s no language that can convey that.

Scar is a mermaid. Scar has been left behind by all of his friends. Scar is lonely.
That is, until he meets two humans on the beach, and decides that playing a little joke on them would be fun. So, Scar pretends he doesn't know their language. As a bit. A little prank. But Scar doesn't expect to like them so much, and once he realizes it, he's too far in to go back.

Thump thump thump.
Heavy bass rippled through the water in time with Scar’s heart, each wave of the music sending a sharp pain through his skull. He hated the way it reverberated through him, the way it seemed to overpower any other sound. He flicked his fins anxiously, straining his ears beyond the thudding bass to listen for his cue. They were about to start talking about him, and he had to mold into his performance. Smile like how the humans do, make sure his eyes sparkle, make sure the light hits his tail just right so that his skin shone.
A shrill beep sliced through the water and he flicked his tail sharply, sending himself through the surface. The sound multiplied, hammering against his ears, but he ignored it, flashing a smile towards the audience. He turned in the air and dove back into the water, whipping around surface again. His tail ached, but he couldn’t devote any attention to it. He had to keep performing.

Mumbo looked at the sticky note saying I want to see you burn the world for a long, long moment, blinking in mustachioed astonishment, before saying flatly, "Absolutely not."
"Aw, come on," Grian muttered to himself from his vantage point atop the display shelves. He scribbled out another sticky note and crouched, waiting for Mumbo to turn around, then got tired of waiting and sneaked to the side to place the sticky note just to the right of him.
It took some effort. The sticky notes were three-quarters of his height, and they kept sticking to his hands.
