Trucy giggled. “Oh, Polly, don’t be too hard on yourself. I do believe you’ve found something today that you’d lost for a while, but I’m glad it’s back!”

“And what is that, exactly?” Apollo asked, expecting a reasonable answer.

    Really, he should’ve known better.

“Your patience!” Trucy chirped with all the smugness and cheerfulness she could muster.

    Summary

Trucy Wright doesn’t break character. That’s just a rule. Never let them see you falter. Never show your hand, never let the performance mask slip. Never stop smiling. That was the Gramarye creed. So when the mask began to slip, Trucy Wright did the only thing that made sense.

    She disappeared.

“You… you could have just asked, you idiot,” Apollo croaked, Trucy snapping out of her stupor at his tone, “You didn’t have to hurt yourself to get me to spend time with you.”

    “B-but—”

“No buts. Please believe me when I say that you never need excuses to spend time with me. I may be busy pretty often, but I promise that I will make time for you. And Khura’in? That was a one-time thing. The next time I make any drastic plans, you will be one of the first people to know. Okay?”

Ah, the other shoe. In his lap, Kristoph’s hand clenches into a fist, stretching the skin over his scar. Gramarye and Wright, Wright and Gramarye, always coming back to those two infernal names.

“Your mouth is twitching,” Justice notes, and Kristoph hates that he noticed.

“I’m sick of that man,” Kristoph says. He’s not sure if he’s talking about Wright or Gramarye.

This is…familiar, familiar and wrong. Because they used to be like this on quiet days, Justice’s fire against Kristoph’s ice, talking and laughing about everything from law to what meat was best in enchiladas. They shouldn’t be like this again, and yet Justice seems to have forgotten everything that happened, still gives his company as freely as fire gives its warmth to dry grass.

There wouldn’t be a hell hot enough for the Phantom, Apollo thinks. He resents the fact that he was allowed to live, that the sniper that shot him didn’t aim for his head, and that he’s recovering in hospital when Clay Terran was laid to rest not even an hour ago. With his fists clenched in the sofa cushions, he wonders vaguely if he could find the Phantom’s hospital room and finish the job.

And then he wonders: what was that?

“Oh dear Justice,” Kristoph bemoans - and there’s an oddly-timed pause in his words hidden in a sigh that makes it unclear whether he meant oh dear, Justice, merely expressing his disappointment; or oh, dear Justice, which is… something else entirely, and makes him happy in a strange sort of way that the man he admired so is still fond of him, that their bond hadn’t been damaged beyond repair after his first trial.

“I’m not upset. It’s nothing,” Trucy rolls her eyes, and Apollo’s bracelet squeezes again.

Apollo doesn’t even need to say it. She just gives her a look, and immediately Trucy knows what she means - her posture deflates and she looks off into the distance, brows furrowing sadly.

“You just-” she sighs. “You look like my mom.”

Apollo took a deep breath and drew his trump card from his file. “It is,” he said, “and here’s how I know.”

It was the most recent photograph she’d sent him—outside of his apartment, July nineteenth. Trucy was standing in the hallway outside his door, drawing back a little in surprise. Past her, through the open doorway, Apollo and Klavier were a blur of motion, an almost indistinguishable tangle of limbs. All around them, in savage black marker, over and over, overlapping itself and blurring into illegibility, were the words ‘I warned you.’

Klavier leaned forward to look, as well, his face gone pale with horror, and Lucia let out a low whistle. “This is the kind of shit you’re being sent?” she asked. “No wonder you’re so on edge. Christ.”

After a long several seconds of silence, Trucy says, "Apollo?"

    "Yeah?"

She bites her lip for a second, then says all in a rush, "We're ten years in the past, you just got hired to work at the same law office as my dad--only he's not my dad yet, he's not even a lawyer yet--and we're pretending to be siblings."

This sits in the space between them for a few seconds. Then Apollo lets out a long sigh and nods. "Yeah," he says. "That pretty much sums it up."

The day after Wrocky's trial, Apollo Justice wakes up stranded ten years in the past with Trucy Wright. Somehow, things only get more complicated from there.

Follows the events of Ace Attorney, Justice for All, and Trials and Tribulations.

This isn't just acting anymore. This is them building a life in a time they were never supposed to live in. Trucy wants to have a family here.

"I don't expect her to show up again ever," teenage Apollo says. "I'm sorry--" this part is kind of stumbled over, like he hadn't quite realized how harsh the words sound. "But when people leave, they don't come back."

"And it doesn't matter," the older Apollo says, very firmly. "People that care don't leave in the first place. Some of us here aren't going to leave, so it doesn't matter what choices other people make."

    - Supplies for ten thousand for two years
    - Approximately fifteen thousand Burnished prisoners, in various states of health

"There’s no vents for ash filtration," Galo notices. An idle, quick firefighter's assessment. If Kray's plan had worked, the sky would be clogged from it.

Galo skimmed the list, body itching to be where Lio was, offering triage to prisoners. Then, he stopped and stared. Ignis’ writing is familiar, easy to read, but that doesn't make the list any more comprehensible. “Aid allocation? Casualty reports? Initial terraforming locations? Permanent housing solutions? Captain, they should be asking you about this. Or anyone actually qualified to talk about it!”

Ignis squeezed his shoulder. His eyes were solemn and proud behind his sunglasses. “You're a hero, Galo. This is what happens when the medal and the praise actually means something.”

It would be wonderful if… when… it was just him and Katarina…but would it be any fun anymore? No more keeping on his toes constantly to block Keith’s maneuvering, finding ways to deflect Mary’s moves that had all the subtlety of a battering ram, making sure his dear brother was kept clueless, and always on guard for the dreaded Ascart double team. He’d never admit it, least of all fully to himself, but a part of him adored every minute of it. It wasn’t boring. It was intellectually challenging. Katarina never caught on, so it just kept going on. Maybe it should?

No. No it shouldn’t. It should end with him and Katarina. He had obviously read too much of Lady Billings’ poetry. Weird ideas were getting in his head.
