Summary
Across the other end of the arena, is Kris. They’re acting nonchalant, with their sword held firmly in one hand at their side, the tip of its blade grazing the ground. They’ve got a slight advantage, here, seeing as their metallic armour serves to protect their chest and provides some form of support for their ankles.
Susie, on the other hand, isn’t granted such an honour. Her dark world outfit is made solely out of cloth and fabric, aside from the golden embellishments within her belts and arm accessories. The weight of her axe rests atop her left shoulder, where she’s only using one of her hands to support its handle.
There’s not that stark a difference between the two, in terms of strength and power. They’re both pretty commendable assets in terms of battle – which is exactly why Susie is so curious to see how this’ll go.

“Mumbo and Skizz and I are all holed up in one of the little caves down in the cliff, and I can’t get a wink of sleep. It’s awful. Please?”
“Unless I’m getting that lovely diamond armor, that’s a no,” Scar said, flashing Grian a grin. “Besides, your cave’s gotta be way better than up here. Sleeping under the cherry blossoms is nice until you wake up with petals in your mouth.”
Grian snorted at that, the first normal reaction Scar had gotten out of him, but his expression remained strained. His gaze dropped to his lap with a sigh, his face fully hidden from Scar.
“Look, I didn’t want to say it, but it’s— I can't help it. Stupid avian instinct thing.”
Grian claims his instincts are forcing him to sleep in Scar's bed at night. Scar buys it until he doesn't.

The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.

The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”

This is what Rocky tells himself. He folds up on his xenonite shelf above Grace’s sleeping area, and he listens, and he fiddles with his clock, and he tells himself that it is not so long.
