As they turned the corner, another group appeared in front of them. Guns drawn, faces tense. But Kate barely saw them. Because at the front stood a face Kate knew better than she wanted to. Green eyes, blonde hair, a little shorter than she remembered.
“Yelena?” Kate blurted.
Yelena Belova’s gaze sharpened. “Kate Bishop,” she said, lowering her weapon without easing the tension in her shoulders, almost with annoyance.
Kate did the same, her mouth catching up before her brain could stop it. “Wow. Hi. Your… hair.” The words slipped out before she could stop, staring at the short, tousled strands.
She blinked, scrambling. “I mean…you’re here?”
“And you’re not supposed to be,” Yelena said flatly. No bite, just that cool, unmistakable Belova irritation.

“What do you mean?“ she demands. “You only have a small amount of time left! Why would you stop now?”
“I don’t know,” Kate murmurs, and Yelena is bewildered to hear a faint echo in her own emptiness, coming from nearly six thousand kilometers away. “I just don’t really know what to do now, I guess. Clint says I’m the new Hawkeye, but that’s not official or anything. And even when it is, it’s going to be a lot of training. So I’m waiting to wait, or something, and — and I don’t know why I’m talking to you about this, actually.”
“Sometimes, it’s nice to just talk,” Yelena thinks and then says. “But I don’t think you should drop out of school, Kate Bishop. School is cool.”

The issue was, well, she had quite a few issues around sleeping. That’s probably not all that surprising given…everything…but lately, since the whole thing with the being murdered and then the nuns repeatedly trying to kill her again and the tomb and Adriel and the battle and all of that, Ava has really not been able to sleep well.
She can sleep, yes, and obviously has to when she gets too exhausted that not even the Halo can keep her moving. But when she does it is not pretty. She’s been decently good at hiding all of this so far. Even on the road while they were trying to get here, she’d been good at hiding it. She can fake sleep well and has gotten pretty good at timing little naps when she has the space to be fully alone. Even if that was only 30 minutes at a time while Beatrice ran out of their motel rooms to get them supplies, it would at least keep her afloat.
But now there might never be any time to be alone. Beatrice had just sworn not to leave Ava alone in sleep and she would be sharing with Beatrice for the foreseeable future.
