John and Rodney are always outdoing themselves to impress and/or rescue the other, and this song is perfect for them. I'm a huge sucker for matching physical motion to music, and this vid delivers as it mirrors the lyrics to tell the story of all the risky and dangerous things John and Rodney have done for each other and for Atlantis. But while the lyrics are upbeat, the clips are often not, and it creates an interesting contrast between the silly antics of the song and the perilous situations John and Rodney find themselves in, and the ending, as the song slows, feels almost bittersweet.

The next stop on my journey to better understanding vids was this piece by twings that explains how, and why, they edit songs to fit their vids rather than the other way around and the additional control that gives them over the story they're telling. I found it a fascinating look at the decisions that go into making a vid and the options available to a vidder who has the tools to get in there and remix the sound as well as the source.

This piece really changed the way I watch vids. I'd enjoyed them before, on a basic ooh shiny level, but learning how shape and movement can be used to link clips together made something click in the old beanpan and suddenly I had a whole new appreciation of what vids were about. Contains text, vids, images displayed in slideshows, and gifs. One of the videos is no longer available, but I think it was a fight scene from a Buffy episode.

“Admiral Hale,” Kirk said as he approached, a familiar amused smile played at the corner of his lips. His eyes had not drawn away from Spock, “I am grateful to the extended invite - I hope it will not be an issue…?” The query, Spock assumed, was directed at himself. He raised an eyebrow - he was not the organizer of the event, merely a participant, so such a line of questioning was outside of his ability to either confirm or deny.
“Commodore?” was all that escaped his mouth. His eyes were such a startling shade of blue.
15 years after the destruction of Vulcan, and more than 10 years since Jim and Spock had seen each other - torn apart by severe injury and misunderstanding.

The small coastal nation of Askazer-Shivadlakia is about to celebrate the coronation of a new king. Between coronation preparations and his father insisting it's past time to find a husband, Crown Prince Gregory has his hands full. He thought it would be safe to outsource hiring a caterer for the banquet to his trusted assistant, Alanna, but a miscommunication means that rather than hiring an elegant professional chef for the occasion she's hired Eddie Rambler, the loud American host of a TV show about greasy spoons.
As it turns out, Eddie's also a great cook, and he's thrilled to learn everything there is to know about the country as he prepares menus and befriends the staff. He even charms Gregory via late-night fish fries, afternoon picnics, and his terrifying specialty, the Trash Tower. It doesn't hurt that he's handsome...and openly attracted to the crown prince.
It can't be more than a fling, they both agree. But Eddie's falling for the country as much as for its incoming king, and Gregory is beginning to wish the perfect King Consort in his head looked a little more like tacky beach-bum influencer Eddie Rambler, floral shirt and all.

There is no other way to put this: essentially everything about Popular Consciousness Kirk is bullshit. Kirk, as received through mass culture memory and reflected in its productive imaginary (and subsequent franchise output, including the reboot movies), has little or no basis in Shatner's performance and the television show as aired. Macho, brash Kirk is a mass hallucination.

Horáková, who is active in fandom, I checked, explores how far the pop culture idea of James T. Kirk has drifted away from the character on screen. Pop culture remembers Kirk as a womanizer, as rash, impulsive, as an asshole, basically, and our sweet Jimbo is none of those things. He will punch a Nazi in the face, but he also likes books and pretty flowers and having a nice chat with Spock's mom, and consent and easy access to birth control are very important to him. His is a case of grave mistaken identity, as we see in the modern characters meant to parody him, like Futurama's Zapp Brannigan, or, unwittingly, J.J. Abram's James T. Kirk, who shares a name with the man and not much else.
A thoughtful and incisive essay on James T. Kirk and the dogged way pop culture continues to misremember him.

Contains some typos and non-standard use of commas, but don't let that put you off.
