“Rumi! Calm down!” Mira swallowed hard. She tried to be as gentle as she could while applying pressure to her back. She couldn’t even imagine how much it hurt. “We’re right here! Just try to breathe!”
“We’re not going to leave your side!” The tears in Zoey’s eyes started to trail down her cheeks. She pressed her hand with a new towel up against her friend’s thigh first. “We’re right here! Just-” She cut herself off as she went to place her hand on Rumi’s arm. She froze with her facial expressions falling.
Tears started to cascade down Rumi’s face as she watched Zoey’s eyes widen, her pupils dilate and her whole body pull back just slightly.
The rapper’s gaze had fallen onto her exposed demon patterns.
Rumi let out a long trembling breath followed by a harsh whine.
She had to cover them up.

Jinu's soul has long since lost its humanity. There is no kindness nor empathy that remains. Instead, there is hatred fueled by shame that he directs towards this generation of Hunters. Mira’s entire body went still.
Just slightly.
But Zoey noticed.
She always noticed Mira.
Zoey stepped closer, finger pressing to Mira’s chest—not hard, but sharp enough to make a point.
“Yeah,” Zoey breathed, tears burning her eyes. “You’re jealous.”
Her voice dropped, trembling but vicious in its clarity.
“You’re jealous that someone actually wants me.”
Mira’s breath hitched—but Zoey kept going, unable to stop the spiral.
“You’re jealous that someone likes me—really likes me—and isn’t afraid to show it.”
Mira’s eyes went wide. Red. Shiny.
“And you’re jealous,” Zoey whispered, the words trembling out of her like she’d ripped them from somewhere fragile inside, “that I might like him back.”

Mira does a better job at stifling her tears than Zoey, but she still feels a few warm drops run down her cheeks.
The hopes and dreams of being an idol at Sunlight Entertainment—hell, of being anything—are gone with a handwave from some guy in a suit and a paper that says “Thanks for auditioning”.
Before she can storm out as quickly as possible to save what little face she has left, Mira turns on her heel and freezes at the sight of Celine, the CEO of Sunlight Entertainment, watching her. That odd woman with the purple braid and mask floats behind her, eyes gleaming.
“Mira. Zoey.” Celine steps towards them. “Before you leave, I have an offer I’d like you to consider.”
Or: When Mira and Zoey, both running from difficult pasts, audition to become idols at Sunlight Entertainment (famous for its mysterious headliner idol Hunter) and fail, all hopes of meeting and training under Hunter go out the window until Celine makes them a different, surprise offer: train under Celine’s unknown ward Rumi instead.

A chill ran through Zoey's spine, her nerves on end as the blood pooled at her feet. Her vision blurred, her limbs heavy as screaming came. Loud, wretched screams. More blood, cold and wet against the cuffs of her pants. It was hers. Her mouth opened for a scream to escape, but utter silence remained as more blood leaked onto her skin. It was so chilling. Cold. Heart-shattering.
It was for love, though. She asked carefully to herself, was this what she wanted? Would they love her more? Would they hold her hands even if they were the same ones she used to snuff the life out of humans. Humans, people family they loved.
No. They didn't care. They were reckless, they cast Rumi and Mira aside, so Zoey was determined to return their place.
No matter what it took, even with blood spilled, she would do anything to make Rumi and Mira happy, even when ethics were at line.
___Essentially, Zoey goes a little crazy, insane, and takes risky actions to avenge the people she cares most for. But when she returns, she hopes they accept what she had to do for them.

Summary
Rumi hadn’t meant to cause such a scene. She just wasn’t thinking straight.
Celine had told her Zoey and Mira would kill her if they found out what she was, and Rumi had come to the conclusion that she was probably right.
Her plan, as tenuous a description as that word was, was to cut the patterns out. If she could cut out the parts of her that made her dangerous, that made her less than human, that made her so unloveable, maybe she’d stop feeling so fucking guilty every time Mira or Zoey opened up to her.
They loved each other from the start, but it just wasn't that simple.
