Summary
Whizzer Brown wasn’t looking for salvation. He was looking for a drink, maybe a distraction, maybe someone to touch who wouldn’t ask questions afterward.
Instead, he found a florist.
Marvin—beautiful, irritable, all quiet defiance and earth-stained hands—looks like the kind of man you ruin yourself on once and forget in the morning. That’s all Whizzer plans to do. Sleep with him. Move on.
But the night he stumbles into that flower shop—half-drunk, half-lost—the air smells like lilacs and rain, and something in Whizzer stops. He keeps coming back for the flowers, for the quiet, for the way Marvin never asks who he is.
It’s only supposed to be physical.
It never is. -

“Well, I had to wait until Trina was asleep, but I wanted to apologise.” I never fully realised how sweet his voice sounded until now, all groggy and soft. The things I would do to have him in my bed, all soft and sweet. I’d tousle his hair, or whisper things to him as he drifts off to sleep, or. Well I’d probably do worse things than that, but he’s too soft right now for me to even entertain that idea. I do a little, but that’s not the point.
“About what..?” His voice has dropped to a whisper, but I can still hear the smile dripping in his voice.“For not calling. But I’ll be free the next few weeks if you maybe want to…?”
“Are you asking me on a date? Because if so, the answer is yes.” He says before descending into giggles.
Marvin has never been the most romantic person, so having to juggle both his wife and a boyfriend (well, maybe?) is a little too much for him.

Jason was propped in Marvin’s lap, one chubby hand smacking the corner of his textbook as Marvin tried to highlight a sentence for tomorrow’s exam. Jason babbled, drooling on the page, and Marvin groaned.
“You’re sabotaging me,” he whispered, pressing a kiss to Jason’s messy curls.
Across the room, Whizzer laughed. “Maybe the kid just knows philosophy is a waste of time.”
Marvin shot him a glare, but Jason squealed at the sound of Whizzer’s voice, reaching out toward him with small hands. And for a second, Marvin couldn’t help but laugh too, the weight of everything else falling away.—————

“...Hello?”
Whizzer’s voice was low and raspy, like he hadn’t been awake but not quite asleep either. Like he had been up late. With somebody, or alone. Up late, breathless. Still, he sounded alert. Marvin already felt stupid.
“Hi. It’s, uh, it’s Marvin.” Do you remember? The fag from the game.
“Oh.” Whizzer said, and Marvin could hear the smile already blooming on the other end of the line. “I figured. You know, not many people call me this time of the night unless they’re horny or dying.” Marvin didn’t answer right away. He felt the scotch in his hand and the heat crawling up his neck. His whole body reacted. “Which one are you?”
Well, the situation’s this: it’s 1978 and Marvin takes Jason out to a baseball game. He’s incredibly bored until one Whizzer Brown happens to sit next to him. It’s a terrible place for this and even worse timing, but Marvin always has a hard time saying no to himself.

Summary
Whizzer starts keeping flowers in the apartment.
At first, just one vase—on the table, where mail used to pile up. Then more: near the window, on the bathroom shelf, on the nightstand where Marvin keeps his watch and a glass of half-drunk water. Always fresh. Always startling.
Marvin doesn’t ask where they come from. He just lets them appear, each one a strange little monument. Tulips. Irises. Wild things, sometimes—branches with blossoms like bruises.
He finds one pressed under the sink one morning. A daisy, dried flat, its petals like tiny ribs.
Marvin doesn’t ask. But he starts to dream of gardens.

Summary
Andrew "Whizzer" Brown has existed since 1963 (even if the birth of his body precedes that).
He's built himself a little fortitude in New York City, far, far away from his past transgressions. New York was where he scrapped everything and truly blossomed. In layman's terms, New York City was where Whizzer transitioned. A select few in Whizzer's life knew about this affliction: the people he met in bars, Trina (accidentally), and his partner, Marvin. Marvin was the most familiar with the slopes and inclines of Whizzer's body, despite how is exploration came with a snarky, entitled mouth. In the tender moments, he tended to Whizzer like a gardener to his tulips.
Marvin's never had the misfortune of seeing the nasty parts of his femininity before, though, the ruddy, coppery part that broke Whizzer down to one tenth of his usual self. Whizzer taking his testosterone guaranteed that.
So, no, the abdominal pains he's been feeling all day aren't cramps. They just can't be. It's supposed to be impossible.

“Here,” the man says, pointing to the clock on Whizzer’s home screen. “It says, ‘March 15, 2017’. Why would it say that? Why would it say ‘2017’?”
“Because that’s the year?” Whizzer says, raising an eyebrow. Okay. Nevermind finding someone normal. This dude is insane. But the man is looking at Whizzer the same way that Whizzer is looking at the man. With weariness, with confusion, with heavy judgement.
