It starts with the dreams.
Not nightmares. Not exactly. They’re too real for that,too heavy, too intentional. Jason wakes up gasping, lungs full of air that smells like swamp water and gunpowder, dirt caked under his fingernails like he’d been digging. Some mornings his boots are wet. Once, there’s mud on the floorboards.And lately… he’s been hearing the dead.
Not all the time. Not like a chorus. Just—voices where they shouldn’t be. A woman humming by a broken gravestone in Crime Alley. A soldier reciting scripture in a trench that hasn’t existed in seventy years. Names whispered like prayers.
One night, the dead don’t just whisper. They plead.Jason isn’t stupid. When you wake up with swamp mud under your nails and ghosts don’t shut up, you call the one idiot who might know what to do. John Constantine looks Jason up and down, lights a cigarette, and mutters, He doesn’t ask how Jason’s doing. He doesn’t lecture about the cost of messing with the border between living and dead. He just gathers grimoires, bottle of whiskey, two lighters, one gun (that Jason laughs at), and they hit the road.

Duke braced himself, bringing his fists up in front of him and preparing to dodge or lose an eye.
The guy swung. The hit never landed.
A gunshot cracked the night wide open, and the guy who’d been about to slice up Duke’s face screamed, clutching at his hand. The sound was pure agony.
Blood sprayed, hot and wet, across Duke’s cheek and hoodie. Too close. Too real. His breath hitched hard, stomach lurching. Some hit his lip. The metallic tang of blood slid into his mouth before he could stop it. He gagged.
Then something fell out of the dark above. Leather flared. Boots struck pavement with a thud that carried finality. A helmet gleamed red under the flickering streetlight.

Summary
On the fourth day, it becomes clear that Joe is organizing something—more muscle than usual, a few more Black Mask affiliates than there should be. The few glimpses of Joe that Dick gets, he’s on his phone, speaking rapidly and gesturing emphatically.
On the fifth day, everything is quiet. No one comes, no one goes.
On the sixth day, Tim calls Dick: they’re not sure where Jason is. And yeah, maybe that’s just normal, and they’re not panicking yet. But they’re not sure where he is. And they’re about to start looking.
And on the seventh day, Bruce shows up at his door with Jason standing next to him, pale and hacking out a cough, putting too much weight on Bruce’s shoulder, and says: “I need to ask you a favor.”

The man, middle aged, a brunette and with a pronounced belly, let loose a jovial laugh. “You know? Your kid with the Pikachu? Looked like a mini sun by how blinding his smile was.”
Kukui made the connection. “Ah, you mean Ash?” A pause. “He ain’t my kid. Just a boarder I’m looking after while he’s going to school.”

Summary
The aftermath of a random alien invasion finds Jason in a bad spot. Like, really horrible, very bad. He's got an injured kid at his feet and a building not actively collapsing above them anymore - this is both a good thing and a bad thing.
