With the right wife, he would bear beautiful daughters, and handsome sons, skilled and strong as the children of kings ought to be.
Idly, Patroclus imagines the grip of those great hands around his waist. If he did not have Achilles…
But he doesn’t. Not really. The cold-hearted creature in his tent is far from the noble man who called to his soul, even in childhood. The Achilles he cleaved himself to, the one he would never betray – that man is gone.
And Ajax’s eyes shine so dangerously in the firelight.

Sometimes you feel like you’ve been writing the same story over and over again for years and someone comes out and blows your version straight out of the water. This is heartbreaking, and familiar like a playlist I’ve been listening to for years. Kaldur isn’t okay, and he shouldn’t be. There are consequences to characterizing someone as living only for the mission, and one of them is that you start to wonder just what they’re really living for, and if they’ll ever get tired of it. And then what’d they do.
I went through a dark period in my life, and the way Kaldur goes through his in this story is familiar in a way that makes me want to reach out through the screen and let him know that it does get better. Even if I know he’d never believe me. Just, ugh. This is incredibly well written and more importantly it is compassionately written. Thank you.

This - whatever this is - is still new, his willingness to submit newer still, uncomfortable and thrilling. In his time away, he almost managed to convince himself he should end things, but soft hands and a firm voice dominated his dreams, woke him on more than one humid night, hot and aching.
