Summary
Whoever was carrying him, they felt warm. Knowing that soon enough he was going to be punished anyway, Tim dared to let himself rest his head against that warm chest. It was a man, Tim decided, though he couldn't recall the last time his Dad had carried him.
That was a lie; Timothy Drake had been four years and twenty seven days old the last time his Dad had carried him. Tim had made the mistake of hitting the side of Jack Drake's head when he got too excited pointing towards a balloon shaped like a bird.
Tim had learned from this mistake, as he learned from every mistake. He made certain not to bring attention to anything childish like balloons to his Father, even if his Dad in turn had not deigned to carry him again. It had been Tim's fault, and he had justly been punished for it.

Bruce didn’t let the lack of an answer to his unasked question sway him. “It made me think of a couple of things, put some behaviors into perspective. I have some questions I think we should go over,” Bruce grunted. Tim wanted to melt into the bed. Or better yet, out of existence. His mind was already running through the possible responses to unknown questions he knew he would have to answer. Bruce moved slowly into the room before approaching the bed like Tim was a spooked animal instead of the stoic calm he was portraying. Tim didn’t react as Bruce slowly lowered himself to sit on the edge of the bed he had been staring down up to this point.
“We never talk about your family or what you do outside of training and Robin. That’s my fault, I know. I know I told you I was uninterested in your life outside of this,” he waved his hand in a vague motion, indicating the “this” he was mentioning.

‘Don’t try to find me,’ Tim said, knowing that this was one of the hardest things he had ever done. ‘Don’t come looking for me. I won’t be there for you to find. I’m going to reinvent myself, become someone new, and if you try to stop me, I can guarantee you will fail. It’ll be like catching wind in your hands.’ Tim choked down the sob which rose to his voice, and continued to speak, the composure he had learnt at his mother’s knee being the only thing keeping him going through this conversation.
‘This isn’t your fault,’ Tim promised them, though he knew that they wouldn’t believe him. ‘None of this is the fault of anyone. It’s just that … I don’t think that this life is suited for me. The evidence of that has surrounded me for years, and I can’t ignore it any longer. If I were to stay with you, if I were to continue … I think that at some point, I would make a big mistake – the sort you can’t change. I would hurt someone too badly, or I would lose someone. And I can’t do that to you.’

Summary
Jason didn’t know when it started. If he thought about it, he remembered the bright light that surrounded his mom in her last days. After that, he noticed the way some people lit up, outlined in a growing brightness that emitted from the edges of their beings. The brighter the individual, the closer they were to death.
At the parties that Bruce insisted on dragging him to, he expected the dim light from the tired old businessmen who drank too much and were limping closer to their ends, glowing a little more every time Jason saw them.
What he did not expect was for the 12-year-old neighbor kid to light up like a damn Christmas tree the second Jason laid his eyes on him.

Forcing himself to focus, Tim looked directly at one of the blurs until it refined into a person, doing his best to lip read to go along with the garbled nonsense being spoken but the damn stranger had a mask on. Not a hero’s mask, a surgical mask.
The bright lights, the hard bed, the mask… All at once the smell of antiseptic hit him and Tim shuddered, wondering just how the fuck he hadn’t even noticed it until now when it was so strong.
Except he didn’t shudder. He just kept lying there, still, with only his eyes able to move.
