Even blind he knows he’s struck something, because the words hang like blood in the air. They snake back down his throat and settle in his lungs with a wet, heavy rightness that Vegas hasn’t felt all night. It would all be okay, he thinks, if Pete hit him. It wouldn’t remove him from his body; it would center him. And Pete’s fists can remold him better, punish him, free him from the filthy guilt-ridden jumble of what he is. They have before.

Summary
When Vegas is handed the keys to a failing major family hotel and told to bring it back to life, he knows it’s not a gift, or a test, or even an opportunity to prove himself. It’s a taunt. It’s a way to set him up for failure so everyone can rub his nose in the shitshow he’s left with, defeated and inferior to his cousins like always. It’s the death sentence of his pride in a gilded cage.
But misery loves company and all that, and he finds a surprisingly fitting cellmate in an unassuming looking employee named Pete. Now if only he could get Pete to stop playing hard to get, this cage could become a lot more comfortable.

Summary
“I’m not going to give you information,” Pete volunteers to his bent over form. There’s no way to know exactly what’s in store for him but Pete feels the need to make that declaration.
There’s a sharp zapping sound, and Vegas turns to face him then, revealing the jumper cables in his gloved hands which are connected to a car battery on the table behind him. The rest seems self-explanatory.
“I don’t want information,” Vegas says, finally looking up at him from the cables.
By then Vegas is already advancing on him, much too close for comfort. But Pete has already resigned himself at this point.
Or the one where Pete is very uncooperative at being tortured, Vegas gets a little too creative and falls for his own trap in the worst way possible.

It hits him like a punch to the gut, for some reason. His stomach swirls with it. He didn’t think that he wasn’t happy until he was asked. No one had asked before.
“I’m… not unhappy,” he says, “I’m comfortable. I’m used to things there.” All of that is true. How things are is as good as it can get, and he doesn’t feel much about it. Kim feels like that now. He doesn't know how to say to Chay that being pushed to talk throws him back into being a traumatized nine year-old. He relied on Kinn and Khun to interpret for him all those years ago and Kinn was always the best at it, and now he doesn’t have Kinn.
Chay hesitates. “P’Khun told me P’Kinn didn’t come to coffee,” he says, and Kim nods. “I thought if you were upset about it, you’d ask me to come over, but...”
Kim shrugs again. He was so upset, and he did want Chay, but… “I wasn’t ready to talk about it,” he mumbles. If Chay came over, it would have been a conversation, Kim knows it.

Once he turns fifteen, Gun sees him as a de facto adult and treats him as such, increasing his expectations even more and setting the bar extremely high. Vegas has little choice but to try and meet those expectactions in whichever ways he can.
