"Now see, I know I'm late." He stopped at the foot of the lounge chair and gave her the grin, the full one, the one that worked every time because he'd built it to work every time. "But I'm pretty sure I'd remember if we'd met."
She turned her head toward him. The sunglasses stayed on and he couldn't read a thing behind the dark lenses, but the corner of her mouth moved. Just barely.
"You're sure about that," she said. Her voice was warm, unhurried, with a Georgia softness around the edges.
He liked that she hadn't made it a question.
"Sweetheart, trust me. I'd remember."
She took another pull off her beer, and he watched her lips around the bottle and didn't bother pretending he wasn't. "Sweetheart," she repeated. "That work a lot?"
"Most of the time."
"Mm. That's honest, at least."
He sat down on the edge of the lounge chair near her feet. She didn't pull them back but she didn't shift closer either, and he rested his forearm on his knee and leaned in. "Shane Walsh."
"I know."

He was on him before Merle finished the sentence. Fistful of collar, knee driving into Merle's ribs, and the second punch came from his shoulder, landed on the side of Merle's mouth, and his knuckles split open on Merle's teeth. Blood on his hand, but he didn't feel it.
Say it again. Say her name again. Go on.
Merle got his hand up between them, big palm on Daryl's throat, pushing. Merle was stronger, always had been, and Daryl felt the leverage go and got a knee under him and shoved back. They came apart, both up on their knees, both breathing hard.

She'd done this before. She could do it again.
The walker got close and she charged, hitting it with her shoulder the way Vernon had taught her to move cattle when she was twelve. The walker went down hard and she went down with it, knee driving into its chest, hands scrambling for the rock.
She brought it down on the walker's skull. Again. The skull cracked. Again. The skull caved in with a wet crunch and the walker stopped moving but she didn't stop, couldn't stop. She kept bringing the rock down with both hands because she was so fucking tired and so fucking lost and Gran was dead and Sarah was dead and Vernon was alone on a farm she'd never reach and she was never going to be safe, never going to find anywhere, never going to--
"Ain't gonna get any deader."
The voice came from behind her. Male, Southern, cutting through her spiral.

Summary
The bat found David's other knee. Another wet crack. Another scream. David's guy with a tire iron raised high broke from the crowd. Negan pivoted. Lucille swung in a short arc and caught him across the face. The barbed wire tore through skin and the guy went down hard, tire iron clattering across concrete.
Negan stood over him.
"Rule three. You don't interrupt me when I'm talking." He smiled. Wide and bright and absolutely feral. "Consider me your daddy now. And daddy don't like interruptions."
Jesus Christ, did I just say that out loud?
The apocalypse was definitely making him fucking weird...But it worked, he could see it on their faces. People wanted someone in charge who wasn't David. Even if that someone talked to a baseball bat and made daddy jokes.
Simon was still holding his gun on the remaining crew members."I'll workshop the rest."
Then he brought Lucille down once. Twice. Three times. David's skull caved in with a sound different from the bikers. The body twitched once and went still.Negan straightened and Lucille dripped red.
