This one is in the standard reverse-gender-roles, PIC setting. I am tired of specifying this, even if it's important for the stories.
The Industry is cruel, and you've learned that nearly an entire year after graduating as a film major, still jobless. She's a self-help author who's proven wildly successful, so it's a large improvement from your horrible rented apartment. You still can't forgive yourself for your perceived failures nonetheless.
Nicole is affectionate and loves to dote on you, sometimes in a way that feels downright overbearing. Your father is long gone, so working from home keeps her in the house with you almost constantly. She treats you like a child still, only rubbing in your failure to thrive.
One day, everything changes after a discovery. Your mother has been evasive and secretive about her past, but curiosity made you throw open the lid to Pandora's Box. Things have been discovered that can't be undiscovered, and it may change things forever.
