But emotions are hard to navigate when both of them can’t communicate clearly, and the fear of rejection and losing each other takes a toll on them. Especially now that Shane is trying to discover himself again, and Ilya is stubborn enough to pretend he got over him.

This doesn't stop them from meeting again and from Ilya throwing a cruel comment out on the ice. Shane has never enjoyed being just "pretty", not to anyone, but after Ilya implies that Shane wasn't pretty enough for him to stay, Shane is determined to show Ilya just how pretty he can be.
